An English degree has only 1 career path now: Education! Publishing is dying a slow death due to web advances. The only publishing outlet doing anything is the 1 doing Harry Potter otherwise find something else.

2) student loans only cover employable majors

I have multiple PhDs in nuclear engineering, astronomy, physics and math.

I started a home business fixing nuclear reactors and 757s in my rural area 10x10 garage.

I am broke and can’t find work.

A Bachelors degree in English qualifies a person to move back in with their parents usually. That's why I studied Engineering. Tough time at a top school. I worked my butt off (it grew back) for 4 years. But, I knew at the end there would be a job waiting in the private sector. I considered what I could do with the degree afterward. College is to prepare you to be placed in the right first job. It is skills and critical thinking you are supposed to learn, not how to use a bigger funnel of beer at a frat party.

My degree and the subsequent MBA have served me well over the years.

The problem is students who go to college to "earn a degree" and think that they are entitled to employment regardless of what they study. You are at college to make yourself attractive to prospective employers. If you miss that, you can end up like this woman the article is about.

She finally landed a steady paying job after 2 years as a receptionist...2 years for that?

When federal money in the form of loans and grants started flowing to US colleges and universities, the gates were thrown wide open and they stopped rejecting the stupid.

The only chance for them is the overbloated gov sector or Academia.

Also...note: she lives in "rural Pennsylvania." I doubt if there are high paying jobs out there for a woman with a degree in English.

so what's the point of any degree ?
it means you completed a program and in cities w/open admissions and free tuitions it takes more than six years to do a four year on and on.
THEY accomplished their authentic INTENT at destroying our educational system.

Read this. Does not sound like she struggled much growing up and while in college. I think her parents spoiled her and she is dependent. Has no idea what hard work is. So she contacts the media for sympathy.
