But, you have to get to them and administer the vaccine and wait a couple weeks before it become effective. They can still catch mumps and spread it during this lag time.
Also, mumps vaccine is about 75% effective for one dose and 88% effective for 2 doses.

Mumps immunity can also be overcome by intense exposure in close contact situations like dorms, sports teams, incarceration facilities, etc.
It is fine for protecting against casual contact but can't withstand repeated intense exposure to the mumps paramyxovirus.
