BREAKING!! 5.3 EARTHQUAKE Big Island Hawaii

Deflating. Not serious.

Hilina Slump. During the last strong quake in Hawaii, a magnitude 7.2 event on November 29th 1975, this slump slid toward the ocean by about 11 feet. Another temblor, the 7.9 magnitude Hawaii quake of 1868 caused the slump to move as well, resulting in a tsunami with a maximum wave height of about 60 feet.

Need at least something in the 7's to move the slump ... probably high 7's to 8's to cause it to have even a small risk of failure.

It WILL happen sometime ... but could be 5000 years from now.

yeah but that is deflating at the summit... which means the earthquake loosened some blockage at the magma chamber and is now draining into tubes/chambers. But that is just my uneducated guess.

CN. When we had the quake that broke the Washington monument I was surprised at how many people went unconscious when the quake struck.

My imagined reason for this is perhaps related to the same effect that causes earthquake lights--piezoelectric effects because of all of the granite (quartz) being stressed underground here in VA.

I suspect your present home of Nepal has great amounts of granite and quartz as well.

Perhaps that is the cause of your 'early warning system'.

This quake is 7.5 miles from the Kilauea Crater.

Where everything started recently but had calmed down.

5.3 not so bad. It does tend to undo one. However, we were there during the 7.0. Now that was bad. And also there during all the recent volcanic eruptions. That was exceptionally bad for the area where the lava was flowing and bad for the rest of the island with all of the vog pollution.

Funny how everyone's attention for a few weeks was riveted on the lava and fissures that were destroying homes and making a mess of lots of land on the big island. Then people took their attention span - short or otherwise - and went elsewhere.

Hawaii soon became another case of "been there, done that."

It was mostly 2’s and 3’s that are the daily. Hundreds of them.

No it was one of 5.3 each day apart from the smaller ones. We have kept the track on them in the big thread and we were waiting for it every day.
