Interesting question Lance. If you were telling the truth your grandfather (great grandfather?) was a Jewish Holocaust survivor complete with a tattoo. Your story was that he got the tattoo from the work camps. Many like him escaped the Holocaust by working. Some were skilled labor but many were just doing manual labor and many died due to the poor conditions in the camps.

Overall the Nazis captured 15 to 20 million people to be used like your grandfather as slave labor. Most Jewish Holocaust survivors were in a slave labor camp of some sort. Others survived by hiding until the war was over or fleeing Europe altogether. The story OP posted started with a visit to a school by Anne Frank's stepsister. Both were captured as teenage girls and sent to a Nazi slave labor camp. Anne Frank eventually died of disease since she was sent to Bergen-Belsen which had a major Typhus epidemic while this other woman stayed at Auschwitz.

You never told us about your grandfather's family. Is he the only one in that branch of the family who survived? Many families only had 1 or 2 members survive.

Good point. When including the over 2 million mostly Catholic Polish civilians, 3.5 million Soviet POWs, Serbs, Gypsies and others the death toll of the Holocaust was 10 to 12 million and at least one study puts the death toll at 15 to 20 million!

We must have read the post in a different way. I might have misunderstood. I was trying to explain to the person asking how one could have Jewish grandparents but still not be Jewish.

Grandparents were Polish Catholic. I didn't say they were gassed, many definitely kicked the bucket in there. Grandfather was captured and spent the war in labor camps building wood-frame structures, picking onions, and drying mushrooms in the rafters. His two sisters, and parents were never accounted for but his brother eventually surfaced years later. My grandmother lost both parents and eight siblings in a combination of disease and worked to death in a camp of some description that was eventually liberated.

I can't speak for the Jewish experience and frankly (Anne Frankly) it pisses me the fuck off none of you realize how many fucking Poles weren't Jewish and still died in the camps. Not to mention every other non-aryan ethnic group in the region at the time.
