They're not comparable situations at all.

The planes are carshing because while the pilots may be doing their best, the planes are not operating as intended.

On the other hand, just about every gun fatality (rare occasional accidents/malfunctions aside) is because the gun worked EXACTLY as it was intended to... but was intentionally misused to cause harm by the operator.

If guns are a problem then why would police have them? Simple, because the police don't use them to cause intentional harm outside of defending themselves or others. The same is true of the average citizen who owns firearms for lawful purposes (hunting, defense, recreation).

If your argument is that criminals and the mentally ill use them to cause harm - It's not the guns loose on the streets that are to blame... it's the criminals and mentally ill loose on the streets that are the problem.

Now that we've identified the actual problem, the obvious solution presents itself... criminals and the mentally ill should not be loose on the streets. Fix the root problem, and the symptom (firearms homicides) will resolve itself.
