Getting eye glasses for first time. What should I know? Advice please.
After decades of not needing glasses I noticed age is catching up with me. Went and got tested and my eyes are crap. Blurry far away and blurry close up. Need either two pairs of glasses ,one for each issue, or one pair of transition glasses. This not being something I ever had to deal with before. what advice does my GLP brethren have on this issue?

I wear glasses (stopped wearing contacts long ago) and all I will say is, handle them with care.
Great conquerors and kings identified themselves with the sun and utilized its impartial spirit to ensure the loyalty of their subjects. Countless religious ceremonies and monuments, cultural pageants, and seasonal festivals around the world can be traced back to the ancient worship of the sun or related to it through agriculture and fertility rites.

Re: Getting eye glasses for first time. What should I know? Advice please.
Look into supplements for eye support, mostly antioxidants, and eye exercise regimes (you can only them do 5 minutes at a time twice a day at most, anymore you could do excessive strain that will make things worse). If you are older it will take longer and be more difficult to recover, but as long as you don't have any cataracts or other major damage you will be able to improve your sight at least enough that you won't need to depend on the glasses for the most part. You should also get a good pair of UV protected polarized sunglasses and wear them every single time you are outside (even when cloudy); obviously if your vision is bad enough that you can't drive safely you should get some clipons for your prescription lenses (which are generally cheaper than UV polarized prescription lenses).

In the process try to use on the prescription glasses as little as neccessary and you should see noticable results in a month or two. The last time I went to the optometrist he told me I didn't need glasses anymore and was kind of standoffish when I told him how I accomplished it; they don't want people to be healed because then they will lose all that precious profit.

When you take them off always put them in one place only or you're going to lose them and never put them someplace they can be damaged, not even for 'just a moment'.

Also, you're going to kick your own ass when you go looking for your glasses and finally realize you're still wearing them- that'll happen at least a couple times. chuckle

Good advice. I held out getting tested for so long because I always beleived eye glasses made vision worse. I think straining all the time is actually doing that to me now.

I have always bought decent eye glasses, and you still have to be very cautious with them.

You are right on both accounts! Typical straining eye use is not good for you, but glasses do nothing to help the core issues which typically are oxidative stress and improper eye muscle contraction. If you dilligently do the correct kind of daily exercises, take the right supplements, protect your eyes from UV, and prevent excessive straining from erratic unpolarized reflections, you'll be surprised at the results you will see. Its definitely not a easy task and you have to put your will towards it every day, but its ultimately worth it imho.

I would get progressive lenses for near and far...easier
to see thru than trifocals I have found. For instance if
you don't have them and need glasses for driving, you may
not be able to see the speedometer in your vehicle if you
are not wearing your farsighted glasses.

Re: Getting eye glasses for first time. What should I know? Advice please.
get them at zenni online. just buy the cheapest frames, like $7 complete, buy 2 pair for near and 2 pair for far. don't buy any extra bullshit, like special coatings or special lens materials. so total cost will be about $34 including postage for 4 pairs of glasses. don't buy same style frames for near and far glasses, you'll be constantly mixing them up. it's sometimes a bother switching glasses but I like it better than bifocals. glasses are like jeans, more expensive is not better, just buying designer name. frame styles, if they look fragile they probably are, if they have big thick plastic temples, they are probably very sturdy.

For your near vision, +1.25 add is good for out around 2 to 3 feet, +175 or +2.00 add for near, like around 18 inches. Just add that amount to your distance prescription.

Hi Old Custer

Everything is a blur for me past 4 feet away. Don't know what you'd call that.

I've worn glasses since I was 11. Loved every minute. I just like wearing glasses.

so first off, I'd encourage you to enjoy your glasses - play with them, different shapes, styles, moods, etc. see how different frames have different effects on people (really! And people really do seem to treat you like you're more intelligent if you wear glasses...).

Back in November the optician suggested a new prescription with trifocals, promised me I'd love being able to see everything simultaneously in glorious clarity....
WRONG!
Literally, 10 minutes was ennough to show me that they are bloody hard work and you feel like you're bobbing up and down in a swimming pool all the time.
Persevere, she said, it'll get better.
I did and it didn't.

So I went back to a single lens for distance.
And got a new cheap pair for mid-distance, mostly for screen work when I feel the need to wear them.

Some people do ok with bi or tri focals I am led to believe. They're not for everyone though. (Had to keep my eyes dead still and move my head a lot back and forth to read half a sentence even on screen...the mid-distance lens in tri focals is always tiny apparently. Useless for me).

Enjoy whatever you decide to get and if you opt for tri focals make sure you get a guarantee that they will refund you your money if you can't get on with them within a month or so.

DO NOT BUY YOUR GLASSES AT THE OPTOMETRIST'S OFFICE!!! I cannot stress this enough.

Make sure you leave with a prescription in your hand. Do not let them leave out any info. Specifically the pupil distance. They like to "accidently" forget this.

The above link is just one of many online providers of eye glasses. Do your own research.
