Wait until you wake up to start wearing them. It is easier for your eyes to adjust when you start your day with them.

Dont get the anti glare coating, when it goes away form cleaning it will spiderweb the lenses. They will try to sell ti to you so you wont have a glare on the glasses FOR OTHER PEOPLE. Screw other people, if they wanna talk to you the glare will be fine.

After decades of not needing glasses I noticed age is catching up with me. Went and got tested and my eyes are crap. Blurry far away and blurry close up. Need either two pairs of glasses ,one for each issue, or one pair of transition glasses. This not being something I ever had to deal with before. what advice does my GLP brethren have on this issue?

My friend just went on a rant about this and she's the sharpest person I know - best advice is get the glasses that are all in one pair. They are much more expensive but so worth it! and include the *glare* reduction lens that make a huge difference for night time driving.

So that's one pair for distance, reading, sunglasses, and glare reduction.

Probably cost around $500 so careful not to leave them anywhere!

Never heard of the spiderweb thing. And I only know of it making night time driving much easier - reducing glare from on coming lights, etc.

I was at a meeting last month and it was announced that half the members weren't there because they can no longer drive at night - I was shocked!!

With glasses for the first time, especially bifocals, they can affect your depth perception. Walking down any stairs etc may feel awkward for you until you are used to the glasses, so hold onto the guardrail.

Despite wanting to take them off and get used to them another time, please keep them on. You'll adjust to them faster if you keep wearing them.

1. Doc will dilate your eyes at the exam, you won't be able to see for a few hours after that. It allows him to look for disease.

2. Tell your doc it's your first time.

3. Make a list of questions you have, don't be embarrassed to ask.

4. It will cost more than you imagine to get glasses. Call your insurance and ask. The doc office will add on frames, lenses, and additional for stigmatism (eyes not equal).

5. You can get a prescription (as previous poster mentioned) and take it to Walmart and get glasses for less (possibly, they have less choice on frames).

Only clean them with the cloth the eye doctor gives you or some other eyeglass cleaner. In other words don't use your shirt or a papertowel....... Lenses scratch easy

I should have told them to be sure to upload a photo of themselves so they can see how they will look on their face.

when it comes time for you to pick out the frames, they'll ask if you want plastic or glass lenses. plastic will feel lighter on your nose, glass is heavier. i think plastic scratches easier, so i pick glass and pay the extra cost.

If you get contacts, don’t take them out drunk after eating blazing hot buffalo wings, no matter how good you wash your hands.

Go to Costco for an exam-good price, good service. Once you have your prescription, it’s good for a year. Shop around for some cool specs- get something you like. Heck, theyre on your face for everyone to stare at, spend the money.

Lastly, thought about laser surgery? Me? Fk that, nobody is cutting my eyes open, but just a thought.

Good luck four eyes.

I am a huge fan of cable temple frames. They kind of wrap around the backs of your ears keeping the glasses from falling off. Also keeps them in place during rifle and shotgun recoil. (Tell your optometrist if your a shooter to get protective lenses)

If you value your eyes spend extra for shatterproof polycarbonate.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77345707

Polycarb is crap.
Much higher dispersion (false color fringes).
CR-39 is OK, glass better.
DO consider trifocals.
T, Optician anon.

Kind of upset. I asked for the best lenses available and my receipt shows they ordered polycarb. I wasn't worried about money and value optical clarity over a few bucks.

Re: Getting eye glasses for first time. What should I know? Advice please.
I've worn glasses and/or contact since my early twenties. A few years ago doc recommended progressives as now I have age related issues too. I balked at the idea that I'd be wearing "bifocals" and refused opting instead to use different scripts in each eye in an attempt to balance out my vision. Went back a year later to get the progressives- so much better!! I literally wore them home from the office with no problems. Still kicking myself over letting my vanity determine my choice.

Best prices are found online- but if its first time buying I'd buy at the office and let them give me a good education on options & how to identify quality etc first, if you have the money to do so. Costco is a popular discount option in my area.

Opt for the glare protection & get the best quality lenses you can.

Buy the disposal eyeglass cleaner wipes in bulk & stash them everywhere- vehicle, bedroom, by tv, etc. Nothing cleans as well, sprays & wipes are extra to keep up with.

Get used to putting your glasses in their case when not in use!

Get prescription sunglasses too or transition lenses if you prefer.

Re: Getting eye glasses for first time. What should I know? Advice please.
I bought some from a mainstream optician. The lenses were bad and other people were saying the same but I may have used washing up liquid or soap to clean them. My lenses now were from someone like Zeiss or something and there isnt a scratch but I only use water and most of the time they are smeary but thats better then scratches. Typical though. The only lenses that Iv never scratched need replacing as my script has changed. I really should buy something like a Progear Eyeguard Tackle Goggle but for now a band that attaches to the arms and locks them to your head will have to do. I bought an army one from ebay. You dont have to attach it now. Just might keep your glasses on your face. When I was younger ( when we had done acid a few times ) although it wasnt strong. Anyway. We were climbing accross walls of peoples gardens in terraced houses. I jumped off a wall and a washing line pinged my glasses into the air. I was like wear are my glasses. no one heard me but they land about 10 seconds later and I actually found them but then it happened again ( im convinced it happened again ) and not a de ja vu because everyone at that stage was in stiches because my glasses pinged into the air from a line but then called bs when I was saying it happened before, some gardens down.
