It's an attempt to get POTUS to resign. Think about it, many people draw the line at someone attacking their family. In case Trump is that type, they were hoping that by attacking his family, he would give it up and resign. The objective is and always has been to get rid of Trump by any means necessary- either impeachment, or getting him to resign (harassment of POTUS or attacking POTUS' family until he can't take it anymore)
