Remember replacing an old pair of sunglasses and was horrified to find the named embellished on the lens! But it was a real glass lens, and the paint left via razor blade.

It's tough when you're non-conformist, and once in a while what you do naturally becomes popular.

Ahhh...the "obedient rebels" of the left. True minions in every sense. Ironic that the 60's hippies who protested "the man", the "establishment" and had the mantra "don't trust anyone over 30" have themselves become a very authoritarian establishment in their elder years.

Re: Do you remember when you were a kid a conformity was not cool?
masked conformity has always been hip. In the 90s everyone was listening to alternative music, how was it alternative then?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75543000

I don’t know but there was a really raw period within that time period.

The Nirvana Unplugged concert (not so much their debut album).... watching Kurt (and looking back it’s obvious a plethora of power/moral dynamics were present throughout that entire ‘intimate gathering’... Nothig compares to it.

Something I can’t explain existed through that short window of time musically. And I wasn’t what others considered a ‘grunge’ fan. I was a cheerleader that recognized what can only be looked back on as an authentic short-lived phenomenon:)

Everything good in your life that makes you comfortable is thanks to fossil fuels! Where ever the are hardly any fossil fuels you have third world conditions that are far more destructive to the environment. Read some books you fuckin dummie (that are not written by fuckwits like Al Gore)

Re: Do you remember when you were a kid a conformity was not cool?
Very true. Kids went around saying "I'm a non-conformist." Then shopped the same style, label, shoes, etc. A few truly were, more or less, delayed conformists. There's always that tell-tale rebel floating about through life - a piece of jewelry, your own style after comfort became The Issue, etc.

Now there is thought conformity. It used to be mainly about fashion and the latest phrase.

Re: Do you remember when you were a kid a conformity was not cool?
"Do you remember when you were a kid a conformity was not cool?" NEVER. Never Ever was conformity not cool.

In the 60s If you didn't conform to whatever was the prevailing dress, attitude and thoughts you were shunned as it always has been. Try working for IBM and not following their dress code. didn't happen.

If you were ever "counterculture" you conformed to That.

I remember standing at the bus stop waiting for the school buss the day LBJ was elected. We were Goldwater supporters and I was sad. (Goldwater would be drummed out of the Republican Party these days, way to smart)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77075061

We dressed a lot alike, but we had dignity and self possession and YES, psychological models of the day stated that conformists weren't going to be "remarkable" or invent new things because people were content and like a sense of social belonging, but were unique and coped with that better than these little ignorant birth disasters who can do "sex" for thier trade and "score" for thier dope? Those "conformists" of the 50s were adults at 15, built thier own cars, had physical strength and life skills and could adapt to or fit thier selves to about any worthwhile work - the half gay tragedies now can't even change a tire or walk outdoors without falling down. Blacks became super ignorant and whites the same? They know nothing of past or present? Just a stream of programming from the most evil cripple makers in the world.
Leaving a death trap and saying "I don't think I'd touch that" while the stupid do and self extinct is one thing - aggressively programming them to be helpless, detestable, toxic and bucket fish is beyond "darwin doing his job". They intentionally made disgusting and infected things of them promising, ala weinstein, that "dirty kids get prizes" and led them off to california, florida, ny and texas.
The thinking must be that there are soooo many it has to be the "half stupid and/or issues" ones too.....and all of us that didn't get our hundred million together in time.
I am glad, for the good I could do, that I lived? I am GRATEFUL that I had instincts, a whole natural nuclear family and relatives and multiple skill sets, farming, nature, medicine, kung fu, literacy and general husbandry. These squibs think a relationship is a spoiled, useless, attention demanding used pencil sharpener that they "comfort"! They became the woman? Like bezo. An angry tragedy that thinks "washing dishes" makes him "super sexy" - that's beyond npc, even if it is an npc king, propped up and given everything to usurp and destroy business dowm to corporate controlled EVERYTHING.
They prove 2 things; conformists don't cut edges....but they could not if they wanted to and that non-conformity does not mean "tear it all down vengeant hippie/punk/satanist", because negative non-conformity is the biggest self defeating suicide of all?
Life was contentment and if you were restless, you could try being creative.
They aren't creative at all, just imitative and they think degeneration is "freedom!" and "envied!" I got nothing for that?

Re: Do you remember when you were a kid a conformity was not cool?
HOGWASH (lady with glasses meme)

Kids used to establish small areas where they were "different" but had to wear the same jeans and shoes as all te others to be accepted

In the 90's corporations started putting labels on the OUTSIDE of every piece of clothing - DESIGNER BRANDING BEGAN and since then every kid is a walking talking BILLBOARD for brands.

It's the degree of conformity - as anyone who studied history and fashion knows

In the 50's and 60's they wore poodle skirts and bobby socks and did the HOP

The BLEAKER street of London took over 60's fashion (Twiggy)

Then 70's had hippy bellbottoms and macrame headbands

80's had BIG HAIR and padded shoulders (Dallas)

90's invented "designer jeans" and syndicated character clothes for children (McDonalds kids wear haha!)

And on and on

There has always been conformity - the PRICE has just risen - those AIR JORDAN shoes are hundreds ...

Same goes for fashions in cars - remember when big engine CIVICS and SRX 's were the thing for young guys to drive in the 2000's?

A far cry from late 20th century muscle cars !

Every generation defines and identifies with some popular culture - it's just that now its international and social media has homogenized corporate promotion and of course the kids do t even know it .

I laugh at the recycled fashions - hey belt packs are back in again I see hahaha
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33629500

Hogwash? The word can easily describe your own laundry-list of social trends!

I happen to date back to the 50's and was a "non-comformist" before the term became fashionable... even being named "Most Non-Conformist" in my high school yearbook. And, YES - it was an INSULT and anything but an HONOR! And I heard the same intolerant ridicule from classmates and teachers alike - the kids because they didn't like someone their own age pointing out how foolish they were and the adults who resented the fact that I was challenging everyone at such a young age. Talk about a lose-lose youth!

And, I especially stood out from the "in-crowd" because I was a city-kid who attended a rural school filled with farm-kids who laughed at me from the first day because I didn't even own a pair of blue jeans [and didn't until several years after I graduated from high school]! FYI: they may have laughed behind my back, but NEVER directly to my face, which told me even then they were just a bunch of brainless Chickenshits.

But: it was "misfits" like myself who had the courage to take to the streets to protest the illegal/immoral VietNam war, or get shot down by the National Guard at Kent State. You see, WE HAD A CONSCIENCE and acted upon our convictions instead of marching lockstep over a cliff like a bunch of Lemmings.... or today's young "Progressives!"

The BIG difference? Back then we were considered dangerous to society due to our outright rebellion, while today winey little Snowflakes are held up as being noble, socially-connected and self-aware. So, this time I won't say hogwash but instead the more accurate, BULLSHIT!!

Just because there have always been Sheeple -who slavishly followed everything pop-culture said they should- does NOT negate the fact that there were likewise just as many people who avoided same like the fucking plaque.

BTW: I may be old, but having lived during those decades I still remember that London's "Mod" subculture -with the hideous Twiggy- sprang from Carnaby Street and not "Bleeker" ... which I notice that you couldn't even manage to spell correctly!

Today here on GLP, I laugh -and rail against- stupid little fuckers who think it's clever to use not-so-clever words like "carsh" or "brian" -because they are just as ignorant as those skinny-assed girls who wore thigh-high shiny Vinyl Go-Go boots back in the 60's. Because -just like history itself- the stupid social cycles endlessly repeat themselves.

BTW: I never liked Andy Warhol, either. My tastes turn solidly to the masters such as Raphael, DaVinci and Michaelangelo. Not surprisingly, they all date from the RENAISSANCE - when men and women dared to challenge accepted standards to forge new, non-conforming ones!

I remember conformers and non-conformers.

But what I don't remember is conformers somehow deluding themselves that they were non-conformers.
