Vlad the impaler had something to due with their failure to destroy Europe. The pope used him as a last ditch plan to stop the muslim invasion. After he stopped them the church abandoned him. He died, still devoted to the Catholic church, for some reason that I don't understand. He is a hero in his homeland, and should be a hero to Christians. His methods were a bit unconventional, but effective. The muslim hoard didn't really want to fuck with the guy that impaled them on pikes around his city.
