Pilots - Q about Lion Air Crash

I have been reading about the latest air crashes and I noticed something odd.

I understand that the auto system was working against the pilots

But why were the pilots receiving erroneous altitude calculations also



Some circumstantial evidence is very strong

As when one finds a trout in the milk...
