Strategically Russia should be all for an arms race in missile defense technology.. Think about it. If money and research was channeled on both sides to shields and missile defense then soon enough both sides would have full blown energy shields, or as good as. At that point both sides will have no use for missiles or ICBMs, and the only thing that would matter would be conventional forces like large armies and number of tanks... This would work in Russia's favour.

Actually Russia just celebrated 5 years since it occupied Crimea and militarized it to teeth.

Strategically, this is a direct threat to Israel.

there are no nuclear forces in the Balkans area that are not under nato control. Israel is the only country in striking distance that is not nato controlled, and has the capability to impede a Russian advance.

Actually a condition for the "peaceful" disintegration of the SU was that Nato would not go into the countries that the Russians considered as "puffer zone" against another invasion from Europe (Napoleon and Hitler as the most prominent ones).

That and the horrible losses in fighting invaders is something that is deeply ingrained in the russian collective.

The collapsed Russia was weak financially and militarily and their former "allies" and "friend states" .. or as we called them "vassal states" were hellbent on, well, not being so good friends with russia anymore and invited the west.
