I guess. The secret societies demonize the perversions, which drives up their price, then blackmail people for engaging in them. People try to join them to stop some of the harm which no one can escape, since the list of things demonized over time now encompasses the entire human person, thus increasing the societies' power. Something will eventually give, and the people best situated to escape the fallout are going to be those who are in charge of the game that caused it all.
