Humans are social creatures and thus a human lacking a pack or family will have problems with this.

A family is the basic level of support for physical and emotional needs.

The military creates a unit by using this knowledge.
The military creates a support system which is like a family.
The military teaches to give emotional and physical support structure for the Unit to function correctly.

When a soldier is separated from their unit they will require their family to give this support.

When a soldier does not have the support system in place they become unable to cope and end up on the street being homless
