They were successful in this endeavor, because Europeans are more skilled at doing things like this, however, what transpired resulted in a MASSIVE WAR in Donbass and other areas of the Russia/Ukraine demarcation surrounding area that has been so secretive, that nobody even knows how many people have been killed.

German intelligence estimated that AT LEAST 50,000 Ukrainians were being killed per year, which is in the same ballpark as Syria. That's a lot of people, especially on a European front after Two World Wars. (Lessons unlearned apparently)
