I'm guessing any burglary would usually involve guns...

I recommend one for every day of the week! Open carry is legal here, though honestly I've only seen ONE gentlemen at a local eatery carrying a revolver. I prefer to have mine concealed. We've plenty of a certain demographic who are more than idiotic enough to grab at someone's gun and use it (though that RARELY happens, if at all, but they ARE stupid enough). Thankfully though down here those sort of people end up on the news dead if they try something stupid like that.

I just made the move from Hawaii to Texas. Was originally heading to Mexico but my son insisted I come live with him. Hawaii, while beautiful, is WAY overpriced, crowded and with corrupt, stupid politicians. First thing that hit me here in Texas were the LOW prices on everything! Wow! I’m in Killeen since my son is a NCO at Fort Hood. Beautiful quiet neighborhood with people of varying ethnic backgrounds since this is primarily a military town and everyone was originally from somewhere else.

New Bruanfels is beautiful, so is Kerrville. If you like beauty go to the hill country, if you like barren wastelands go to west texas area where you will find mesquite trees and tumbleweeds.

I live in TX and I can tell you that it is nothing more than Eastern California because of cunts like you coming here.

It's a mix in Houston. The oil guys are conservative. The college kids...not so much.

It's big enough that you can find your sovial niche.

It's a weird city, though. I didn't like it, but many do.

But it used to flood before the diversion flood gates were installed a few years back. Not as bad now. Many of the homes in Nassau Bay(a little west of Taylor Lake) are being lifted because they flooded too many times. Harvey being the last. Our shop used to be in Seabrook, many years ago, and it seemed Clear Lake backed up a couple times a year. That's nowhere near Liberty County, though.

That being said, to the OP's point, flooding can occur anywhere south of I-10 if we have enough rain. It's all coastal prairie...flat, flat, flat. But if the house is several feet above the surrounding landscape, it will probably be fine. But get flood insurance no matter what!! It's cheap if you aren't in a flood zone, and get in anyway. We are subject to hurricanes and wind and rain can be devastating if you aren't prepared.

Remember some parts of the Houston area are designed to divert and hold massive volumes of water in an effort to prevent or lessen the severity of flooding in other parts of the city. Reason #77,285 why I love being out in the country: Houston goes under water even with a good downpour. Out here, the Earth just drinks it up.

Looks like you'd have to be a legal citizen or permanent type to be able to quality for handgun for self defense. You might be able to get hunting rifles though.

Used to live by the bayou at 610/290... My parents house never got flooded but it did get rather close when TS Allison came. I got stuck overnight in the commerical garage because everything got flooded after going to the bar...

OP , there are 50 states to choose from ... I've lived in 18 of them, and Texas is at the very bottom of my list - along with W VA ...

In some places, like Austin, Eminent Domain is abused.

Property rights are mostly surface rights. Mineral rights are owned by someone else and the state can make water rights an issue.

Owning a piece of land where you can have a water well is a big deal.

Texas is pretty nice and It's huge, the people are so polite here in south Texas that it will blow your mind a bit if you're from up North.Everyone will call you Sir or Ma'am and it takes you back a bit at first but "when in Rome,do as the Romans" is a pretty good bit of advice for fitting in anywhere. I haven't been back to the UK for 20 years and doubt I'll ever go back again. The end of March and it will hit 82f today. We live near the Gulf in Corpus Christi for the last 6 months, on the edge of town so it's nice and quiet. If you can stay out of the big city rat race and live on the edge of Huston you'll probably enjoy it if you're adaptable enough to immerse yourself in a completely different culture.

2 cents - I've done business in Texas, primarily DFW and HOU. Texans have very much a "cowboy" mentality and are generally initially wary of outsiders. Insular.

Most are fairly friendly. Business climate is very much a "wild cowboy" attitude. The "don't mess with Texas" attitude with a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Not overwhelming, but definitely noticeable.

The economy down there is always growing. Lots of foreigners primarily from Mexico. Learn Spanish.

Generally, an uneducated populace compared to NE or Midwest. Like others noted, very high violent and drug trafficking crime in certain pockets.

Bounties and immunity from prosecution would take care of that one.

Houston isn't "terrible" yet. Stay away from Austin. If you want any kind of work, you'll need to be close to a larger city. Th rural areas are beautiful, but the work is very limited.

I love Texas. Always have. If you can imagine a vast expanse of land with every climate under the sun, come live in the Lone Star State. It's not the most beautiful state, but it has the best people, as a rule. I mean, there are nice people and bad people everywhere on the planet, but only in Texas could a gal like me be stuck on the side of a desert road and a helpful cowboy will pull up and ask me kindly if I need assistance, and not fear for my life. Texas was originally known as "Tejas", which is a Native American word that means "friend".

I've lived in all parts of California, also in Georgia, but Texas always draws me back. As they say, "It's a whole 'nother country".

My recommendation is to find a smaller town outside of Houston proper. The small Texas towns are the BEST. Good luck!!
