I remember when Russia warned the US not to strike Syria, and we did so anyway (twice). Putin did nothing.

Russia warned Israel not to strike inside Syria on multiple occasions. After being warned, Israel made a point to go out of their way to hit the specific area that Russia warned them not to strike the very next day after Russia issued its warning. Again, Putin did nothing.

They knew they could not accomplish their goal without direct confrontation with the Russians, and they want no part of that. So they abandoned their plans and left.
