But when he found a sheep running through the city with six colorful helium balloons attached to its ear and tail earlier this month, it certainly ranked among the oddest things he had come across. Then things got weirder. As Giordano finally caught the wayward sheep by the leg and tried to wrangle it into his truck, a man approached. “He saw me wrestling with it," Giordano said Wednesday. "He just walked up and said it was being used for some type of sacrifice.” Giordano told the man to stay put as he secured the sheep - balloons and all - but when he turned around, the mystery man who mentioned ritual sacrifice had vanished. The sheep’s ear was sliced open and infected where the balloons were attached. A patch of wool was also missing on its back, but it didn’t look like it had been sheared, Giordano said. “It looked like it was pulled off in a big square piece,” he said.. “He was starving," Bergmann said. “He started eating right away and ate for a half-hour straight.” The sheep was treated aggressively with ointments and eyedrops every two hours for 10 days and has almost completely recovered, Bergmann said. His sight has returned and he will be introduced to other sheep at the zoo when his 30-day quarantine period ends.
