PIN AND UNPIN THREADS: Put it in the hands of the people!!!
I think that there should be a "Pin button" and an "Unpin button" on every thread. If you think a thread should be pinned, there should be a "Pin button" for you to click. If there's enough votes for a thread to be pinned (maybe 10 or more), a thread would automatically be pinned.

On the other hand, if you think a thread should never be pinned or a thread that has been pinned should be unpinned, you would click on the "Unpin button." If there's enough votes for a thread to be unpinned (maybe 10 or more, for example), a thread would automatically be unpinned.

What do you think about this idea?

I HAVE a pin/unpin button on every thread. This would never fly because people would reboot and continuously vote until there were 60 Ron Paul threads. Seriously, what are you going to do when 60 threads are "voted" to be pinned and then decide enough is enough? Try to talk everyone in to voting to unpin some? Come on, think it through.

It would work if IP addresses on the votes were recorded. Whoever programs the system could make it so that you can't vote on pinning and unpinning threads when you're using a proxy server.

As long as the system was making sure that each IP address could vote only and that you can't vote if you're using a proxy server, spamming threads would be impossible, each person could only vote once.

There are lots of dial up users here, as evidenced from threads about ISP's, and I have DSL and can change my IP by clicking on some settings from my ISP.
You're not being logical, you also ignored what I said about what happens when you have 60 pinned threads?
You aren't even registered I'm assuming since you are posting as an AC. If you register you can add threads you like to a favorites list anyway. Maybe you could try that instead of pushing an agenda.

Again, the system would need to do two things:

1. the system would need to ensure that each IP address could vote only once

2. the system would need to ensure that you can't vote if you're using a proxy server

If the system did these two things, everyone would only be able to vote once from a particular IP. Therefore, spamming the system would be impossible.

We could go back to the old way it used to be where a whole range of IPs couldn't vote again after one vote had been received in a particular thread (for example, if a vote was received from 120.40.4.43, no more votes could excepted from 120.40.x.x).

Yes and you're not understanding:

1. Dial up users can reboot and are assigned a new IP, which is what the 1-star people are famous for doing, so they can vote over and over.

2. Even with my DSL I can change my IP with a few clicks.

I'm not arguing about it. Ask Trinity or Sergio. Good luck, lol.

I think it would be a nightmare. Maybe pages and pages of pinned, useless threads. I like the idea that those threads that interest us could be voted to be pinned, eventually, but everyone here has such diverse interests.

And then there are the trolls. 10 threads about poo pinned just for shits and giggles (pun intended).

You're right, I'm sorry for being ignorant. Two other ways to do this come to mind though.

1. Only paid users could vote on pinning and unpinning threads. Trinity originally said that paid users would be able to pin a certain number of threads each month, is that still in effect?

Allowing paid members to vote on pinning and unpinning threads would be good for business because people would probably pay $10 a month just to have the ability to vote on pinning and unpinning threads. This would be an incredible advertising point for GLP. This idea would take care of the spamming problem because each paid user would only be allowed one vote and that's easy to check.

2. We could go back to the old way it used to be where a whole range of IPs couldn't vote again after one vote had been received in a particular thread (for example, if a vote was received from 120.40.4.43, no more votes could excepted from 120.40.x.x).

You forgot about the other part of it. You can vote to unpin threads as well. And too many threads getting pinned wouldn't be a problem because the number of votes required to pin a thread could be raised and raised and raised, if necessary. So, if there's too many threads pinned when it only requires 10 votes, then raise the limit to 15, then 20, then 25, etc.

thumbs If anyone here does NOT believe there would immediately be 2 pages of pinned Ron Paul threads, you got a serious problem.

As for only allowing the votes of registered users, fine. Then a bunch of AC's would make a bunch of sockpuppet accounts immediately and reboot to vote over and over.

That plan might work at one of those crap hole forums with 25 posters on average, but not here, with this many posters.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The mods do their best. Besides, if it's not pinned, it's probably good enough that you'll find it there on the first page anyway. It's been this way for many years. I'm not a control freak. I'd just want to enjoy GLP without making decision. And if you don't like what's pinned....don't read it. geesh

No, what we need to have is separate message boards in this forum, for example 1 for politics, another for space/science, etc. With just one board as it is right now, it gets chaotic and all sorts of threads get pinned. Besides, there is forum software out there that the web developer can implement which would be much easier I bet.

how about each user has the ability to select mod pins or pins by popular vote..

if spamming becomes too numerous, people will go back to the mod system....which sucks about 65% of the time
