I see you beat me to it. Not to take anything away from the Canadian guy, as what he's done is admirable, Proenneke did 10 times as much, did it by himself, was much farther away from any semblance of civilization, and did it for decades, not years. There are both books and videos about Proenneke. He was an amateur photographer and also kept an extremely detailed daily journal. Along with photography, he was passionate about filming scenes of nature. This was way way before digital anything or the internet, mind you. So, over the years he developed a friendship with someone named Bob Sweyer (sp?). I think they met because the national park service formed a new park where Proenneke's cabin was and Sweyer learned of Proenneke's homestead through a park ranger, or something along those lines. Anyway, years later, and with Proenneke's permission, Sweyer published books and released videos documenting Proenneke's life using Proenneke's own writings and video. So it was kind of like YouTube many decades before it came about. The first book about him is titled 'Alone In the Wilderness'....another reason the thread title caught my eye. Proenneke is one of the inspirations for me moving 4300 miles to Alaska 3 years ago. Amazing guy |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77416903 Inspirational story, amazing skills and determination this guy has. You can learn so much from his videos, he's a smart, decent and humble guy who's learnt a lot of wisdom along the way. But there's no way he's spent 2ys alone in the wilderness! He spends a week or two at a time up there then goes back home to his wife and family. stocks up with materials and food and goes back out. Then his wife and daughters join him, most often his wife. And he's got Cali, the dog. He has his YT friends over (joe Robinet is one, worth watching) and he goes over to theirs or out on long hikes with them. He pops into the local town a few miles away at least a couple times a week, to buy stuff and upload his vidoes to YT. plus, i think he recently got internet at the cabin. No, Shawn's life is nothing like Dick proeneke's almost total isolation. Did you know Dick proeneke had food flew in? He had his own bush plane (co-owned with his brother from California). The 'food' he flew in was staples like sugar, flour, sourdough starter, etc. He was legit. Check out his videos and books/journals. You'll enjoy it. |

They're called Alone In The Wilderness I & II... If you're familiar with the series Survivorman where Les Stroud films himself with his own camera equipment in isolated environments - well Dick Proenneke was like the originator of doing this, but back in the 1960's... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76866894 He is married and his wife stays there . permanent soon. like mine. Nice going!! Prayer is the most powerful force on earth. “I care not for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.” Abraham Lincoln I sign all karma given. Would that those giving it to me followed suit. |

Hangs out in the cabin and films his grizzly Adams episodes 3 weekends a year. The rest of the time he spends in a condo in Mississauga. |
American Indian Elder User ID: 77460590 United States 03/31/2019 04:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dick Proenecke built his little cabin totally with no generator or chain saw, just hand tools, all in one year. My own Dad built a two story bldg. with a three bedroom living area upstairs and his carpenter shop downstairs with lumbar yard lumber in just 7 months, starting in April, in 1946. He worked part time at his job and I watched him do it so I know its possible. It takes a certain mentality.I dont mind isolation and am by nature somewhat of a hermit. My husband and I used to go hunting in the fall and walk for hours with out saying a word. But mind you, you're listening intently to the forest all that time. amdg Forgiveness means giving up every hope for a better past, In exchange for a better future. P.S. Ive always had an American Flag, now all of a sudden you gave me a Canada one. ?? Please whoever did this change it back. Not that free Ojibwe/Chippewa acknowledge any imaginary boundry lines... |

Building mostly with hand tools, Shawn James harvests building materials from the forests north of Toronto, Canada and crafts them into functional tools and shelters using traditional woodworking tools and methods. Quoting: sseess [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] Absolutely, well and truly an utter masterclass of building. I was mesmerized watching that all the way though, couldn't believe most of what I saw him build. Stunning, i'm just so impressed right now, humbled, it also hammers home what ludicrously stupid lives most of us live. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77513042 United States 03/31/2019 07:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live in the forest, but in a neighborhood that is carved into it. It's very quiet and peaceful, and nice not having car and plane noises. I kind of miss some of the suburban features, like grass and a swimming pool, having door trash service, but it's still pretty cool, having a nice view, listening to the birds, watching the squirrels, walking to our own waterfall, and always having a ready supply of firewood. It drives my kids nuts because it is too quiet for those city folk. The downside is I have to drive 10 minutes to get out onto the highway and then an hour to shop (just 40 minutes to work though). The neighbors are always so worried about all the black bear, but really, it's not a big deal. So we see one bear or another every few days - big whoop. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77507132 United Kingdom 03/31/2019 07:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Summary. It's easy enough to build a log cabin for anyone with competent DIY skills. His channel is not about teaching joinery skills. There are many other places you can find DIY how to do it videos. This is more of an opportunist way of exploiting the dimwits who send him freebies and praise him and drool over his pooch. He lives in the city and this is his weekend retreat for hunting & outdoor pursuits. I mean c'mon who builds a sauna in the woods. Makes lots of money from add revenue and product placement. Has now devolved into a cookery show with a dog thrown in the mix for the cute factor. If you like this kind of thing you may like. "Primitive Technology" you tube channel. "primitive life" you tube channel. Two years alone in the wilderness..... Give me a break!!! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75706923 Google is your friend people. I like how he made a snow shovel. I think of his deep path to the cabin every winter as I dig my own tunnel to the barn, breaking shovels, snowed in for months. It proves you can put up a roof by yourself and other simple wood working projects for your needs. You can watch him on Kodi, it is in my favorites. I dug a swimming pool water play ground in the woods too, I lined it with a fish safe tarp. I have 50 ft mosquito netting for all around it to protect from the bees and insects. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 77365271 United States 03/31/2019 11:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Mail service is a problem in remote areas. Especially time sensitive stuff. They will deliver to a mail box you put up at the nearest designated road stop if you keep the snow cleared for access. But that gets robbed by no good doers and smashed by the snow plow. You can get a post office box but they fill that up with junk mail and when it gets full they return your important stuff. No good when you are snowed in. You can have all your mail sent to someone you know, but it tends to get misplaced and lost. |
