yeah no...here in NV we have the largest solar farm on the planet...its about 8 miles or worth of solar panels, it only powers about 3% of las vegas power, and some gets corded off to san berno

“If you wanted to power the entire United States with solar panels, it would take a fairly small corner of Nevada or Texas or Utah; you only need about 100 miles by 100 miles of solar panels to power the entire United States,”

“The batteries you need to store the energy, so you have 24/7 power, is 1 mile by 1 mile. One square-mile.”

It’s “a little square on the U.S. map, and then there’s a little pixel inside there, and that’s the size of the battery park that you need to support that. Real tiny.”

If this were spread over the United States connected by a power grid sounds doable and not very intrusive, the panels also being on top of building roofs.. What we waiting for?

Fabricating the panels requires caustic chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and hydrofluoric acid, and the process uses water as well as electricity, the production of which emits greenhouse gases. It also creates waste. These problems could undercut solar's ability to fight climate change and reduce environmental toxics. [link to news.nationalgeographic.com (secure)]

Re: Only 100 square miles of solar panels are required to power the entire United States
Even if we covered the entire US with solar panels, you need other forms of generation because the sun is not out 24x7x365 and the solar panels are not producing 24x7x365. To keep up with the demand of the grid, we will ALWAYS need nuclear, fossil, hydro generation to keep up with the grid demand. Solar can never stand on its own. Add the cost to recycle solar panels (toxic silicon) after its aprox 10 year life has been exhausted and add in the amount of electricity needed to recycle. I want the cheapest energy I can get. Nuclear, Natural Gas, hydro and clean coal gasification. Wind and solar are scams to make ypu feel good and not good economics and not 100% environmentally clean. Do your research instead of being sheep.
 Quoting: Leo17

Wind, hydro and solar can work together. Also wood/plant material are stored solar. I would stay away from nuclear because companies are too cheap to do the right thing.

Energy can be stored as compressed gas, water/gravity storage or flywheel batteries.

Eventually fossil fuels would peak and become too expensive. I do not know when but in somebodies lifetime.

Re: Only 100 square miles of solar panels are required to power the entire United States
The US uses 3,910,000,000,000 KwH per year of electricity. That’s 3 trillion for the dipshit leftists here. Solar panels run about 1,000 per KW. Only harnessing that energy for 1/3 of the time the sun is out. Then with inefficiencies it goes even lower. Let’s just use leftist logic and only get just what we think we need, which is actually just one quarter of what is needed.

$1,000 per KW of solar energy probably needs about a 1/1 ratio with inneficiencies in delivery of power, downed panels requiring maintenance, dust on the panels, loss of efficiency over time. So...

$1,000 x 3,910,000,000,000 equals a cost of $3,910,000,000,000,000 that’s 4 quadrillion dollars and we’ve only got panels. No labor to install them, stands, constant cleaning of dust, batteries, inverters, wiring or delivery. Panels are also basically dead after 20 years and half capacity after 10.

Now lets do batteries, it’s probably the same $1,000 for batteries per KW, except vased on usage you’d need much more. For shits and giggles though let’s just say we only need $1,000 per KW of batteries... we’re now at

$7,820,000,000,000,000 just for half of what we probably need and no wiring, labor, inverters....

That’s 8 quadrillion dollars... in a world that doesn’t even have 250 trillion in actual money.

You can always tell the dipshit leftist. They’re the one who doesn’t understand any math and science and think there emotions and name calling can make the impossible possible.

The whole world uses 22 trillion KwH so just buying the panels and batteries would put us at 22 trillion x $2,000 or

$44,000,000,000,000,000

That’s 44 quadrillion dollars for the dipshit leftists.

And when a hailstorm destroys a vast number of them, what then? Or a tornado? Earthquake? Other natural occurrence of nature? Why not reveal the Tesla files, give everyone free energy, and be done with electrical power all together, by tapping into the same conductive force that induces gravity? Because money, profit, and the control of vast swathes of resources, in order to cage the mind, and harvest the soul.

Dear Moran,

Ever hear of something called HYDRO Electric Power?

It is the TOP producer of electricity in the US

It is 100% clean.

Solar panels are created from toxic materials and do not last forever.

Solar panels are not 'clean' but are branded this way because they are thought to be 'carbon neutral'

Why dont you check out the toxic wastelands in China which are a product of solar panel production.

Cut our demand and our energy solution options grow. Certain alternatives become more reasonable.

Assing you used 300 watt standard units, that would be 3 trillion dollars just for the panels.

Any idea of what it would cost to install them puppies?

Oh, and what about the batteries? Mounts? Interconnecting wiring? SCADA control system? HVDC power transmission lines to ship the power around the country?

What happens when it's cloudy for a week? You would need to keep most of the current power plants still active.

It would double our national debt by the time the project was done.

It's 2019 and we're still using old tech. I mean c'mon not one significant piece of technology has not been released except phones. Where are all the inventions and innovation.im pretty certain there is technology that is better or can be worked on sitting in the patent office.there are several alternative energy groups online and on YouTube that are really innovative and some successful and of course you have fakers and b/s, I see things about geet engines and magnet motors and various other devices that could be sponsored by the government or possibly funded by various groups to explore if these things work or can get improved on.i think this solar panel thing might be a bad idea, we don't know the effects on the environment when you bounce all the sun rays back up into the atmosphere in one concentrated area or do we? I think we need to put more effort into these things instead of all the political drama and hollywood nonsense. Someone should start a alternative energy thread on here I'm sure GLP could figure it out if you pooled resources and legitimate scientist and engineers which I know visit here, I think we could figure something out?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77335372

New tech may be more efficient but does not scale. Older tech which already has the manufacturering in place does scale. I like wind and solar collectors mass produced to be already assembled in a factories and then point a steam driven tower and steam generator to produce electricity.

There was a company that I do not remember the name of that was making solar concentrator shipping container sized that when deployed would use GPS to find the tower and angle the sun collector at the tower and power a regular steam turbine. 100s of containers would be mass produced and delivered onsite and then automatically work with little set up. No solar panels involved.

We built and tested an array of 16 3x4 panels and they barely produced enough power for an avg house. 27,878,400 Square Feet per sq. mi. / 192 sq. ft per solar array = power for 139392 avg. size home. These were extremely efficient modules approaching combined heat and power output of 75%.
Anyways just my 2bits worth.

I am a conservative and have an engineering degree and have worked on nuclear power plants. I am a proponent of solar and nuclear, fusion ideally.
What immediately rankles us conservatives is that the legislation that intends on improving energy generation inevitably has some collectivist solution inserted into the text. Either fix this s**** or don’t,don’t include political stuff into an engineering problem.

Example [link to www.congress.gov (secure)]

Up to section 1 part 2. This addresses environmental concerns, after that it’s about collectivism.

I suppose the more expensive Cadmium panels will leak less

If it is not a crystalline sillicium panel. it will probably ruin the soil and you will be eating Cadmium for generations
