I need some sound advice here, GLP. NO NONSENSE PLEASE...
My fiance and I were out for a walk on a nature trail over the weekend and I saw something glimmering in the woods when the sun passed through the trees. I approached the area and it took a little time to find where it was coming from, but I eventually found it. There was a tree limb and around one of it’s small branches was a ring. To me, it looked like a perfect place to put a ring if you stopped there to wash your hands or whatever task that called for taking a ring off and placing it somewhere. The ring was pretty fancy, and it has a pretty big diamond on it with smaller diamonds set around it. I have a friend who’s mom works in a jewelry store and she confirmed that it is real and worth quite a bit, in fact, it’s an astonishing amount. Now here’s where things get murky. My first thought was to find it’s owner, and I figured it would be a pretty simple task since I highly doubt it just landed on that limb by accident; however, my fiance proclaims that would be a pure nightmare since anyone could claim it’ as theirs and try to swindle me for ownership. She thinks I should just sell it and keep the money. The ring has no inscription and the diamond isn’t marked or logged by a laser. Last night my fiance and I had an argument about the whole ordeal and it’s starting to make me feel uncomfortable even having it in my possession much less keeping money from an object that has already brought disarray into our lives. We aren’t rich people, and the money would absolutely change our lives, but I also hate to think there is someone out there being tortured by the loss of this thing. On another note, I’ve never seen my fiance act this way, and because it’s due to gaining this money, which isn’t technically even ours to begin with...it’s kind of bothering me even more.

What should I do?

Put a ad on craigslist saying you found the ring and have people email you and describe it if it's theirs. If nobody can claim it after a couple of weeks... then finders keepers but at least you have the satisfaction of trying to find the owner.

Put a note in a sealed envelope with your name and phone number and tell them you found the ring.

Give it some time.

Was the guy being romantic and putting it where they had their first kiss as a surprise?

If that doesn’t work, call the police and turn it in.

Take it to the police, they will find the rightful owner and if no one rightfully claims it, they'll give it back to you, if you want it.

Try to find owner, BUT don't give any specific description of the ring.

Make anyone who contacts you describe the ring -- yellow or white gold, total carat weight of the stones, shape of stones, number of stones, size of ring, etc.

I lost the solitaire in my engagement ring. My husband made the insurance claim, it was in process. While vacuuming, I found it.

So we went back and fourth, do we take the insurance payout or call them. We’re never the kind of folks to cheat at anything, so we called and told them to cancel the claim. The guy on the phone laughed at my husband, said no one has ever called back to say they found their diamond after making a claim.

After this experience, if I were you, I’d sell the ring.

Leave it where you found it. Or find owner to return. You sell it or keep it you might continue to question your choice and feel guilt.

That also would work, or the sales receipt from when it was purchased. I have all the sales receipts, appraisals, and insurance riders on my jewelry -- my jeweler also maintains records of what I have.

You better find out what the law is in your state, which is probably the same in about all states.

It's a felony in FLA to find as low as $300 and not report it.

It was real dumb to post your story here, and it will be even dumber if you break the law.

Do you have a city based website with forums for classifieds etc? Try looking on there to see if someone posted about the lost ring. If not, post it that you found a ring but keep the description to yourself and have the people describe it if they think its theirs.. If they match the description and location lost, give it back..

Of course that bothers me. It’s definitely something to think about; however, it’s not a deal-breaker. Imagine finding a winning lottery ticket. Think of all the instant thoughts that would travel through your brain. Also, my indecisiveness can get the best of me at times, and I’m sure that doesn’t make this situation any easier.

Do you have a city based website with forums for classifieds etc? Try looking on there to see if someone posted about the lost ring. If not, post it that you found a ring but keep the description to yourself and have the people describe it if they think its theirs.. If they match the description and location lost, give it back..

Also, sometimes people will report it lost at the police station.. You could go there and ask if anyone reported a lost ring

Re: I need some sound advice here, GLP. NO NONSENSE PLEASE...
You are right...try to find its owner...when I was broke and living in a freaking motel , I found a wallet at walmart stuffed with money, four hundred bucks plus bank cards....i knew immediately i couldnt live with myself if I kept it...I called a lady's number in it and it was the owners grandma...she was so relieved and in full panic mode...she was working there jobs just to make ends meet and bills due. ....another time , also in a Wal-Mart, my kids and i found two hundred dollar bills on the floor...I heard a guy talking about losing them to an employee, and I kept it anyway. ...I will never forgive myself for it...it may have belonged to him...years later, I still feel guilt.place a found ad in your local paper, social media,etc...make anyone claiming its theirs tell you the exact spot you found it in...make them describe it in full detail....do not include any details in your ads...only the person who left it there will know. You will love yourself for it later...and while you're at it, perhaps reevaluate your relationship with your girlfriend. ....is that the type of woman you really want to be with? You are a good person, I'm proud of you. Life is filled with little tests sometimes, it really is! If nobody claims it after six months, maybe save it someplace safe, place an ad once in a while...don't give up. Someone's heart is surely broken over this loss. Pray for guidance to find the owner. This good deed will come back to you. hf

Re: I need some sound advice here, GLP. NO NONSENSE PLEASE...
