Precious metals are an insurance policy against an apocalypse, otherwise a crappy investment. Cryptos are at the forefront of a mass adoption phase. Diversity is good.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77502037

Digital currency may be a terrible idea, but crypto-money is a good idea.

Consider than nearly 20 states in the US have passed laws making gold and silver legal tender. Then consider that it is possible for any encrypted blockchain to be build on a known reserve of gold or silver.

With this system administered by state treasuries it is possible for a person to deposit say 10 grams of gold into the repository and in return receive 10 grams of equivalent crypto-money. If they want the physical metal then they can exchange their digital units for physical metal.

It would be 100% fungible, the digital units would then be exchangeable for other crpyto-units with other states participating in the system since it is based on physical gold or silver.

The limiting factor of course is energy required to operate the system. So a transaction fee would have to be applied by the state to operate the system. But clearly this system has the potential to replace the banks accounting system.

Loans could still be accomplished by private banks but the lending would be 100% secured lending, they could not lend out more metal than they have in reserve. Also, with this system it's possible to create gold or silver bills of credit.

Again, if we are at peak energy then this system would be in jeopardy, but all of our modern technology is under the same risk of failure if our energy sources become astronomically expensive to operate. In that situation gold and silver are still stored energy, they have already been mined, refined and cast into gold or silver bars, coins and ingots.

You sound cocky, but you propose counterfeit-able means of exchange when there are today un-counterfeit-able means of exchange.

That being said, Bitcoin is a shitcoin.

There are coins that are 100.000 times more energy efficient.

But in the long run, the AI's still will take our jobs, so we should worry about how to actually produce something of worth.

Savings will only last so long.

you're right in that you can't eat it. but all metals will always have a value. lead, iron, and copper included. in that regard a penny will out value a dollar.

good luck gardening without a shovel.
