Rise of the 'splinternet': Experts warn the world wide web will break up and fragment as governments set their own rules to filter and restr
Dreams for a connected global internet are increasingly threatened by regulations being brought in by governments around the world, experts have warned.

Plans to restrict content are fragmenting the world wide web, a system created with the promise of connecting people by offering universal access to information.

China has walled off some western services for years and experts are now warning over plans elsewhere in the world to filter content, leading to nationalised internets.

That includes the UK's plans to hold executives personally liable for posts on social media that are harmful or illegal, revealed in a government white paper on Monday.

They say this would put the country at the 'far end' of internet censorship and further fuel the 'splinternet' - a term circulated for a decade or more that has gained popularity in recent months.

These moves come as Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has called for a 'common global framework' of internet rules.

The web's creator Tim Berners Lee has also launched a 'Contract for the Web' that establishes an ethical set of principles for the internet

The New Zealand Christchurch mosques massacre livestreamed online has heightened the sense of urgency in some countries, with debates in the US and EU on curbing incitement to violence.

A new Australian law could jail social media executives for failing to take down violent extremist content quickly.

And a proposal unveiled in Britain could make executives personally liable for harmful content posted on social platforms.

Free-speech defenders warn it would be dangerous to let governments regulate online content, even if social media sites are struggling.

Well, I mean, no one can tell the difference anymore between what's real and what's fake.

Well, well, well. Who couldn't see this coming? So the handful of government/corporate entities are so confident they have control now, they want to set their own rules as law so no one can ever take away their power and authority.

A lot of us new early on they would get control of it. Many more didnt know or care. The same ones who mindlessly think they live in a free society.

Private networks, they will be the only way you can communicate. The internet is used mainly for global monitoring and control of individuals and companies.

Governments have their own private and secure networks.

There is an even higher level "network" that uses quantum tech to communicate. No wire required, it goes through another dimension.

Its impossible for the governments to do that due to the fact that all satellite systems have been hacked and cracked already especially the communications ones.

That would be a duh observation. It's been obvious that this is what the result would be since corporations discovered the internet. Oddly, back in 1991 when my paper was taking off, I was trying to sell ad space to help pay for the damned thing and all I got was "what's an internet and why would I spend money on it?" "Because it's the future." My biggest advertiser was a private eye who used WebTV for his internet. I kid you not.

What will and should happen is the re-invention of networks like AOL wherein web sites would be hosted that aren't visible on the public side, as in like hidden files or login needed to access it but with a computer based app that would only allow access via a custom browser. A remote login if you will like what Limbaugh has been hawking on his show. Wouldn't be that hard to do but would need some cash to create it. And I want credit for it because it's my idea. You'd use the specialized browser because that would negate the damned hackers and spammers who make $181 an hour on Google and can show you how.

The internet will not be splintered.

Most websites (All prominent ones) will choose to adhere to the strictest rules any one or multiple governments make, thus any internet laws in ANY COUNTRY will ultimately effect the United States because companies will not want multiple versions of their website or web services.

Welcome to digital globalism.
