With today's housing prices, it would be cheaper to just buy a very large shed and live in it.

Housing prices are through the roof these days. It would be just cheaper to build a HUGE barn and partition it out into rooms and live in that.

Hell, you can build a square box shed for less than $5K with plenty of room for living space.

I bought a single wide trailer in 2015 for cash. 58 grand. Every one laughed at me.

I put in new AC, new roof, new carpet and appliances. The idiots are not laughing anymore, as i have no mortgage and pay $578 a year in taxes.

I put about 7 grand into it. I got a roof over my head for cheap.

I had the exact same thought today at Costco when I walked by a shed for $600.

Are you reading my mind again?

All you need is 4 walls around you and a roof and floor.

You can put all that together for LESS than 8K!

Who in their right mind would go into debt over 100K for a house the rest of their lives! Most people will never even pay the loan off before they die!

I live in a metal quonset hut style barn and it's great.

The big additions this year are grid power and a large 10 x 12 foot glass window garage door. It's really nice.

Yep. When the housing prices go back down again you can get a 3 or 4 bedroom house for around 100k as long as its not in a big city. Yes it might need some work on it, but it's a much better deal than starting with nothing but bare land.

Homes are expensive due to FRB-inflation n because governments WANT homes to be as expensive as possible. So they can get/justify higher bldg permit fees and higher property taxes...

And because humans are increasing in population but the Earth's landmass ISN'T also increasing.

Supply and demand...

But the authorities will condemn it with a sheriff's eviction.

Maybe in Mexico or South America you can do that...

It all depends on what interest rate your loan is set on and how many months in the length the loan is set on.
Getting a loan on a longer time amount and lesser interest rate allows lesser payments set for longer time financed.
So paying extra principal payments after making each regular scheduled payment from the get go, adds up to lesser amount of time to pay it off.
You can throw in there larger sums of extra principal every time you get any larger sums of money and it shaves off more as well.
Making a down payment lowers it as well.
It all depends on credit score, interest rates on fixed loan never a fluctuating interest rate loan that can change with the change of interest rates to higher and run some time like that costing you less paid to your principal balance.

Your age when you take out the loan governs your payment options as well, the older you are the lesser time to work with the extra principal payments means the higher extra principal payments you would have to pay.

I would not buy a home that high unless I had a large down payment of at least $70-80 thousand or more. Too risky at my age.

OR you can buy dirty cheap houses in Detroit.....I saw a show that had an artist buy a city block....he connected all the buildings together with passageways and decorated them differently.....he slept in a different building each night....he also has unlimited studio space....

He paid around 1k for each building....playing hide and seek would be fun there...

Why did it need all that and cost almost 60k? New singelewides are about that price.

I purchased a 1986 model for just 5k and put on new siding, roof, hardwood floors, new tiled bathrooms, and new kitchen for about 15k and now have a little doll house.

We call them barndominiums. Metal buildings with concrete floors finished like a house on the inside can be build for about half the price of a traditional house.
