Libertarian Couple Uses Bitcoin Wealth to Build World’s First “Seastead” In Gulf of Thailand
Chad Elwartowski and Nadia Summergirl have become the first two reported individuals to permanently cast of the shackles of land and the laws enforced on it in favour of a life on the open sea. The pair have built the first seastead with help from Ocean Builders, a start-up dedicated to helping individuals move their lives to the ocean.

The couple have financed the building of their floating home using money made from early Bitcoin investments. The structure cost them around $150,000, which was actually $30,000 more than they originally budgeted for. It measures six metres square and is octagonal in shape. The pair’s new home is spread across two floors.

According to a report in Reason, Elwartowski had previously explored other avenues to satisfy his cravings for a truly free life. These included “Free State Project, Libertarian Party elections, and the Ron Paul campaign.”

Elwartowski states that the couple has made no effort to seek approval from the Thai government for their new home. He commented:

“We have been keeping under the radar so far, but we follow all the laws of Thailand so it’s as if we’re just living on a boat in the water as far as they’re concerned…. All we expect from the Thai government is that they follow international law. We will be doing the same. But Nadia and I aren’t doing anything we can’t do on land.”

Not good news:

The Third Naval Area Command has filed a police complaint against an American man and his Thai wife who set up a floating living platform 12 nautical miles off the coast of Phuket, a practice also known as seasteading.

Staff judge advocates from the command were sent to lodge the complaint at Wichit police station in Phuket on Saturday, according to a source at the command.

They accused Chad Andrew Elwartowski and his Thai wife, Supranee Thepdet, with an English alias of Nadia Summergirl, of breaching Section 119 of Criminal Code

It is punishable by death or life imprisonment

The source said officers found evidence which led them to believe the couple was engaging in the setting up of an independent state. Such an act would have a negative impact on the country's shoreline.

"The regional office of the Marine Department will be contacted to remove the structure from the sea soon," the source said

Not looking good for them:

Navy files report against ‘seasteading’ structure off Phuket

The Royal Thai Navy has filed a report against an American/Thai couple for their ‘seasteading’ structure off the coast of Phuket.

The Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command and Phuket Marine officers yesterday inspected the seasteading structure but no one was found on the steel and aluminum structure which is attached to the sea-floor. An order to remove the ‘seasteading’ structure is now in the process of being prepared.

The American behind the structure is part of an international movement to claim offshore areas of water under a loophole in rules pertaining to international waters. He is said to have funded the project after successfully investing in Bitcoin.

The Royal Thai Navy has filed a reported at the Wichit Police Station against the couple accusing them of intent to reduce the sovereignty of the State and to deteriorate the independence of the State (rough translation).

Yup. This is what happens when you threaten existing governments, though. They respect international law as long as the other sovereign can defend itself. Otherwise, you get crap like this. Just ask the guy behind the Kingdom of Minerva who spent millions of his own money building up an atoll in to an island only to have it annexed by Tonga as soon as the people who built Minerva left the island.

Man, trying to live sovereign on a houseboat/floating structure in the middle of international waters and this happens to them. Now they are on the run? Crazy times. Thailand should focus on their other issues than messing with a couple who just wants to chill in the middle of the ocean.

Not good at all:

American early bitcoin adopter Chad Andrew Elwartowski and his Thai girlfriend, Suprenee Thepdet aka Nadia Summergirl, launched a seastead on Feb. 2 off the coast of Phuket, Thailand. However, the Thai Navy boarded the structure Saturday and accuses the couple of breaching the country’s Criminal Code, Section 119

According to Siam Legal international law firm, “Section 119: Intent to cause injury to the nation” states:

Whoever does any act with intent to cause the country or any part thereof to descend under the sovereignty of any foreign state, or to deteriorate the independence of the state, shall be punished with death or imprisonment for life.

This structure is not a boat. It is fixed to the sea floor and that makes all the difference.

A friend of mine did that back around 2000 with plastic bottles. A mutual friend (Totally Hip CEO) gave him a 5 horse outboard and we launched it out into the Caribbean. The 5 horse outboard wasn't powerful enough to move the floating island against the wind, and it had to be towed back to it's mooring by a boat.

Spiral Island was destroyed by a hurricane in 2005, and he built a new one which still exists today.

Another friend of mine bought a little island off the east coast of Panama, and was planning on developing it for tourism. His wife ended up with some type of tropical sickness so he gave up on the idea, and sold the island.

The problem with islands like that is they have to be constantly occupied, otherwise they will be stripped clean of anything valuable. My friend Gary was warned about that when he bought the island.

A cousin of mine left his large sail boat abandoned off the coast of Bajaj after his motor crapped out. The U.S. Coast Guard warned him not to leave his sailing vessel abandoned, but he did not listen to them. The Mexicans stripped his yacht clean.

Oh man...what a hassle. Tough being free these days. Pictures from this article's press conference too. Crazy.

The seasteading couple aimed to launch a new sovereign state by creating new land far enough offshore that it would be recognized as independent by the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. Elwartowski claims that his seastead, which he named “XLII,” is located outside of Thai maritime territory, beyond the 12-mile sovereign territory claim..

i see people get mad because it seems to not be legal to do this. but what would be the next step? seasteads for pedos? seasteads for buying taxfree stolen items?

I know theres boats the go to open water for euthanasia, how does that tie in to this?

is it because they are not in international water?
why would no one else (maffia) have dont this before if it was possible?
