You asked what color do we think of and you have extrapolated that into what color are they definitely. You understand those aren't even the same question?

I do .. people started to answer what they thought was the color!

But you are right, I'll update the original post.

This - we have them everywhere in this part of Texas even on country roads where other places would have a stop sign.

Hey ... the majority of people are seeing yellow.

What makes you think that your perception is the correct one?
 Quoting: JADR+

I thought you were asking what we thought without looking it up. This was the first response I agreed with and I gave you my reason why.

Construction yeild signs are yellow though...
 Quoting: Bright Side

Yes - I was just playing with you. :)

I'm just amazed at the answers in this thread:

So we have a sign that has not been used (officially) for over 30 years, yet the majority of people keep seeing it!
Not only that -people were taught this sign at driving school, way into the 90's -
Even more impressive is the fact that young people who were not supposed to even be alive when the sign was yellow, still remember it yellow.

And despite all that - most find this situation totally normal!!!!
 Quoting: JADR+

I think most people do not pay attention to what is perceived normal. At a permanent road intersection most people are probably not really paying attention. However at in a construction zone (where they are yellow), things are not really normal so maybe that's the visual that sticks in their head because their brain goes into pay attention mode.

Soldiers and law enforcement do special training to combat this instinct so they can more effectively do their jobs because normal, complacent thinking will get them killed.

I guess most people just drive with their head in a different world. I laugh at all these people who derisively use the word sheep to describe everyone other than themselves. The fact is we are all sheep some of the time because we all are complacent thinkers some of the time. That's what, in my opinion, the Mandela effect is really about.

Traffic Sign Life Expectancy

June 2014
Published by:
Minnesota Department of Transportation
Research Services & Library

[link to www.lrrb.org (secure)]

Page 1:

"The primary information that currently provides insight about sign life expectancy is the
warranty period provided by manufacturers – 7 years for ASTM Type I, 10 years for ASTM
Type IV, 12 years for ASTM Type IX and ASTM Type XI sheeting. "

Page 14:

"While the data is inconclusive, it does seem feasible to suggest a range for sign life that can be
reevaluated as more data is collected from the test deck for more conclusive results. Initial trend
lines suggest a sign life of 12 to 20 years for beaded sheeting and 15 to 30 years for prismatic sheeting could be a reasonable sign life expectation for Type I, IV, IX and XI sheeting material of all colors
, but further study and data is needed. It is important to reevaluate this sign life range as more data is available. It should be noted that color degradation can result in an initial increase in retroreflectivity. More research is required to clarify the relationship. "

And here is the Traffic Sign Maintenance/Management Hand Book

[link to www.ceam.org (secure)]

Which pretty much repeats what was said in the document earlier.

They both are used, they mean two different things. I bet y’all don’t know the difference between the yellow and the red and white a lot of people dont The yellow is a regular yield sign, the red and white is a stop and yield sign, if you see a red and white yield sign and nobody’s coming you can go but if a vehicle is coming you’re supposed to stop and let that other vehicle go. Wow wow I’m blown away.

I have to say - If there was anything to convince me that we all live in our own private universes/time lines - it would be this thread!

I did not expect that level of uncertainty regarding a basic standard road sign.

I mean common - this is not a spelling issue, or a pop culture quote, this is down simple unmistakable colors.

Either yellow
or Red

Ask any other other nation, and the majority will agree on the colors of their rod signs.

We are living in the twilight zone!
 Quoting: JADR+

It's not that hard to understand, the USA is a big country with states down to cities being in charge of their own traffic, roads, signs, etc etc. Rural vs Urban. If a city deems it not worth the budget to change perfectly good yield signs they will just let them stay. People usually vote on these things and when a bond is put forward to spend millions to change road signs because of color most probably vote no.

US freeways built by the federal government replaced all their yellow signs in 1972-1974.

Yield has been red and white 90% since then.

What I mean is some were around to be seen years after 1972. Not necessarily 48 years to bring us up to now, but to exist to be seen by more people.

I read the old ones were sometimes used into the 90s.
