Atheist = a person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.

Religitards often try to make there own version of what an Atheist means but this is all it is nothing more.

In simpler terms:

Atheist = fool

A fool who, despite mountains of evidence, denies reality.

That's correct, but the question is, why don't they believe in God? They often say they don't believe in the supernatural at all. As if Quantum physics and the Moebius strip weren't supernatural! I think this is rationalization. Because they hate laws, they declare the legislator non-existent, condemning themselves in this way to strict materialists who are separate from their own spirit. This is a bad solution.

Re: People are not atheists because they don't believe in God
People are atheists for a number of reasons.

Some are real atheists .... truly not believing in any deity or afterlife. Some say they are atheists, but they really just don't know and choose not to think about it or practice any religion. Some, as I believe the OP was getting at, feel they might have to answer for things they don't want to answer for so choose to claim they are an atheist...whether they truly are or not. It makes them feel better about their choices in life.

I'll give you two major reasons why I think people choose not to believe, but first a little background.

I am not a christian/catholic but my family is, as are most of the people I associate with so my thought process regarding religion tends to relate to those concepts, because it's what my frame of reference is.

However, I am not an atheist either. I can say I probably switched between the first two groups from time to time but because of some personal experiences I have come to realize that there is more to this world than meets the eye. I don't claim to know WHAT that 'more' is, but I know without doubt that there is something. Some things were internal, as in, no way for me to prove to someone it was real. Other things were external with others witnessing. Some things were confirmed while I was not present, others having the same experience without knowing of mine. Anyway, why do people not believe?

The biggest I suppose is lack of evidence. There is absolutely no evidence of a deity. Things that are used as evidence really aren't, they are simply things we don't fully understand so are attributed to a deity. The origins of the universe, the complexity of life, mathematical relationships in nature, etc... These things are not proof of anything other than our ignorance of these things.

Next would be the perceived contradictions/hypocrisy in a supposed divine system. The concept of a merciful god who lets his most loved suffer, in some cases, horrendously...just to teach them a lesson is enough to turn many away. The idea is that god would punish man with eternal damnation and suffering for behaving the way he was created to behave. If it is true that god created man, then he created man to be as he is, yet punishes man for being the way he created him.

Yes, yes, I know ... free will. God gave you a choice. Well, you really don't have free will if god is as claimed. Here's where the really religious get angry with me....ready? If god is omnipotent as is claimed, he knows the past and future. He knows your future. If he knows your future, your destiny is already known before you are born. If your destiny is already planned, you do not have free will. Your outcome is determined no matter what you do. If he does not know your future, he is not omnipotent. If there is just one thing he does not know, he is not infallible. If he is not infallible, he is not worthy of worship and the entire religion collapses.

But but but.... man is only disobedient because he was tricked to into eating of the tree of knowledge. "The devil made him do it". Well, no. He disobeyed BY eating the fruit. Besides, wouldn't an omnipotent god have seen this coming? Either man was set up to fail, or god doesn't know what's going on.

These contradictions are hard to reconcile.

My solution is - I believe in God, but not in sacred scriptures. For Baptists and other American-influenced Protestants, it might be the other way around - they would give up faith in God rather than in the Bible.

Jesus became a man to put the spirit above the law. His teaching was twisted in a way that now the spirit stands beside the law and creates contradiction and people have become mad in this way. Very sad.

Re: People are not atheists because they don't believe in God
They are atheists because they know they can't obey. Because they do not believe in submission. Why do Christians never get the real problem?

You can make an atheist give his life to Jesus Christ. But you can never make him obey his laws without questioning them and finally giving them up. That is why the Baptist principles of voluntary decision for faith and adult baptism do not work. Without child baptism, Christianity would have long since died out.

I have a hunch that part of this war, is about ridding the world of attachment to the past. That threatens the "religitards", for some reason. It should not. You can think whatever you want and believe whatever you want. The world will not be "ruled" by it, however and that is so immensely beautiful to see.

Great post. hf You did get my point.

It is correct that God cannot be proved by the means of current physics. Supposedly this can be done spiritually through meditation. I have read that Orthodox monks sometimes see the light that Jesus shrouded on Mount Tabor, and that on Holy Saturday a priest in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem lights a candle through prayer. Seems like the trained human spirit is capable to materialize things. But this goes far beyond classical physics...

Well son, you have posted your way into quite an amusing situation here.

There isn't anything wrong with being an atheist, and in fact many atheists are far better people than some Christians. But the labels don't matter in the long run. It's all about accepting yourself and trusting yourself and the tasks and plans you have assigned yourself while here. All of our experiences while here are a product of an equation that is of our own design, and the variables we put in this physical realm mean quite a lot.

Many people try to tell you that you must be saved by Jesus or do this or that to have a true connection with your creator, but this isn't true. It is sometimes easier to use the religions, and if they are honest in their dealings I would even recommend it. Everyone has to be their own Jesus, and you don't need to be saved from or by anything or anyone. We are not born here with free will..

We are not born with sin, so let's give that a rest already. The only sins we are born with are perpetuating this system of recycled slavery, and that isn't something a baptism will fix.

The very first thing to getting to know the big man is to make ourselves into a better conduit so we may again communicate quite freely with him/her or whatever you picture as this creator as it probably doesn't really care. This also means we should check to make sure our conduit didn't get hijacked by someone else, because in this place it's hard to keep the comms up.

In reality your creator requires nothing from and just wants you to live in peace and enjoy free will as it was intended to be used instead of how these alien Tupperware dickweeds have been using it.

If the essence of religion is to seek and find the truth, the religious texts did not and do not accomplish that. I am not trying to start an argument. There is just simply no reason to end the journey with historical texts, that unfortunately have been used for abuse and clearly were written to be used as tools for abuse.

Yes, and this goes to my point of personal experiences. I have experienced things which prove *to me* of something more than we can generally perceive. These things don't prove a deity, only that there is more than we know. Proof is an extremely powerful word that most use incorrectly, myself being guilty as well. I prefer evidence. I have evidence of the existence of 'something' beyond the physical. It is impossible to "prove" god. He can appear in times square on new years eve, perform a bunch of miracles, and would be called a fraud by many. I make no claims of proving god, or providing evidence of a god. Only evidence of there being more than we currently understand.

Some are.

A rather intelligent woman asked me again and again why, if there is a god, he had not answered her prayers when she was seventeen asking god to make her husband stop beating her.

I didn’t think to point out that her husband had stopped beating her. He wasn’t beating her now. She had a new husband and a better life now.

She said she was an atheist but she spent a lot of time with me listening silently pleading to know why God hadn’t acted like she thought he was supposed to.
