Well this may be one way to solve the homeless situation.

Re: Man Living in a 10'x10' Tiny House & Homesteading in the City
Did he buy the piece of back yard his home sits on from the main homeowner? If not, his property is not a homestead and he occupies a corner of someone else's homestead which makes him a tenant. A homeowner in a big city can't usually legally subdivide a lot zoned for a single family residence, so I'm inclined to think that's what it is going on here.

I don't have a problem with the way the guy lives. To each his own, but most of these back yard tiny houses are more like a child's tree house, legally, than a homestead. Homestead is a very specific legal term that doesn't include an outbuilding on someone else's property.

While I generally agree with your post, legally, you can homestead anywhere. The homestead exemption is not just for frontiersmen. It's a legal definition of one's primary domicile.

This is what the US government paid to have built in Puerto Rico or at least what was built for the poor in 1996 when I was there. You got out of the city and you'd see thousands of these things everywhere. Power and plumbing in a 10' X 10' square foot box, though after all the corruption we saw after their last hurricane it makes me wonder if we paid for way bigger houses and someone pocketed the rest.

He has no bills and does a work exchange for the person who owns the property by growing a garden (he has ten gardens throughout the area he maintains) and providing fresh food for the owner.

Very innovative approach to living a self-sustainable life.

So, he's basically the modern hipster version of a tenant farmer. I think most 19th Century black sharecroppers had better accommodations, though.

Tho it is a nice set-up, there is no way local zoning laws allow this in ANY city that I'm aware of. Where is this?
