118 million at risk as severe storms, tornadoes forecast to again blast through central, southern U.S.

Another severe weather outbreak is forecast for Wednesday through Friday this week in the central and southern U.S., in what could be a repeat of last weekend's savage storms that killed nine people.

"We expect numerous thunderstorms to develop in the Plains, Midwest and South starting Wednesday, spreading eastward Thursday and Friday," the Weather Channel said.

About 118 million people live where severe storms are possible, AccuWeather warned.

A new system, currently targeting the West Coast with rain and snow, is forecast to slam the central U.S. and South by midweek.

This storm should cross the Rockies by Tuesday and reach the Plains by Wednesday. Another severe weather outbreak is likely from Texas to Iowa, parts of which could see more damaging wind, hail and potentially tornadoes.

"Another severe weather outbreak is anticipated from the middle to latter days of this week," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Jake Sojda. "The severe threat will begin in the Plains on Wednesday then progress eastward, arriving at portions of the Atlantic coast late Friday."

Some of the same communities devastated by this weekend's severe weather in the South will be at risk again in the days leading up to Easter. The threat zone will also expand farther north, targeting areas from Missouri to Michigan that ended the weekend on a snowy note.

Rainfall on the order of 1-3 inches with local amounts between 3 and 6 inches can occur in two main zones with the event.

One zone will overlap the severe weather threat area mainly south of the Ohio and lower Missouri rivers.

Severe Thursday X

A second area will likely focus farther north from portions of Iowa and southeastern Minnesota to Michigan.

With this amount of rainfall on saturated ground, there is an immediate concern for urban and small stream flooding in both of these zones.

In the southern part, the rainfall may come in a couple of short bursts lasting a few hours or less. In situations where 1-2 inches of rain falls in as many hours on saturated ground there is a classic recipe for flash flooding.
