The black smoke was a petroleum based fuel. Oil, diesel, whatever.
This was not a ‘wood’ fire.
They could’ve torched it with something else. But they ‘wanted’ BLACK smoke.
You know when a new Pope is selected they either send up white smoke or black smoke to indicate if a final decision has been made?
