Trumps DEA and FBI swoops in and arrests over 60 doctors and pharmacist abusing pain prescriptions
60 Arrested In 'Largest Opioid Prescriber Takedown Ever'

Federal officials are charging 60 defendants across five states in what they're calling the largest opioid prescriber takedown ever. These are the first arrests announced since an opioid strike force began late last year.

Listen Listening...0:58
The defendants include 31 doctors, seven pharmacists, eight nurse practitioners and seven other licensed medical professionals. They're charged with participating in illegally prescribing and distributing opioids and other drugs, and other health care fraud schemes.

"Cases like one involving a doctor in Dayton, Ohio, who at one time was among the highest prescribers of opioids in the entire state," says U.S. Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski of the Criminal Division, speaking in Cincinnati. "That doctor allegedly operated a 'pill mill' and funneled prescriptions to the pharmacy housed in his own waiting room which dispensed over 1.75 million pills in a two-year period."

Wednesday's arrests span 11 federal districts in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama.

"As charged, these cases involve approximately 350,000 opioid prescriptions and more than 32 million pills," Benczkowski says. "[That's] the equivalent of a dose of opioids for every man, woman and child across the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and Alabama combined."

More arrests are expected and investigations are continuing. The strike force is expanding to include the Western District of West Virginia. Benczkowski says the indictments are indicative of the Trump administration and Justice Department's tough stance on the opioid epidemic.

I agree with you here. My mom has been on same meds for decades and now she's old and disabled and they're making her jump through hopes now just to get very low does codeine, and quite honestly I'm even scared to pick them up for her because now even person picking up has to show ID like a criminal.

I also know if she would switch doctors I'm sure they would just take her off cold turkey, which would be a nightmare for an older person that's been on them most their lives, but they just don't care.

These people like my mom didn't create the problem, yet they're getting punished and so are good doctors.

Quite honestly the people who should be punished never will, and that is big pharma and the FDA. They knew exactly that Oxy's were synthetic heroine, yet FDA approved it, and the big pharma got rich.

Then on top of this they even allowed to prescribe to young people. A friend of mine lost his stepson, who was prescribed Oxy for back pain when he was under 20, like WTF, why???

He became addicted and his life was destroyed and he OD'ed, shortly after he became a dad, I blame big pharma and the FDA and prescribing guidelines, no way a teenager would ever need Oxy for minor back pain.

Preach it amigo, not only that it will force more people into heroine as the painkillers dry up its basically fighting fire with dynamite. Amazing how we go into an opium rich country to pacify it and magically an opium crisis appears.... coincidental I’m sure. On a side note a year back I got hurt pretty bad, musculoskeletal injury that hurt for months only pain killer I got prescribed was hydrocodone 10mg and 20 pills no refills work sucked sucked sucked still kinda hurts a year later.

I know these drugs are easy to get addicted to.

I know a girl that very quickly got addicted to

benzodiazepine and I saw her get a bottle of 60

and it was gone in 3 days.

That is enough to kill an elephant.

This is really not a good thing.

They have doctors terrified to prescribe pain meds now.

People are suffering greatly because of it.

They shouldn't have prescribed them in the first place. Heroin dealers are no different.

If someone is in pain, they deserve relief.

If you've ever had that kind of pain, pain that no other medicine will stop, you would understand.

Wait till you finally get that kind of tooth pain and no dentist will dare prescribe you pain meds for it.

You're condoning addictive medication because you've been offered no alternative. You didn't get the meds you wanted but you survived. I'd a tooth pulled from my jaw because they couldn't pull it from my mouth. I got opioids for pain. I had symptoms of a junkie afterwards. I wanted more. It's wrong. These doctors know what they are fucking doing.

The VA is responsible for deaths of our vets by cutting back on their pain meds. FACT. Go talk to a vet.

And they won't let them use marijuana.

I personally know someone (apt 16 researchers) who died directly as a result of this. Stopped weed due to fear of being evicted from the only place she could afford while caring for her mother with advanced alzheimer's, switched to pharma drugs started drinking (which they could avoid while on weed) due to stress of mother's health, died on floor from heart failure

I was last person to see her alive. I had to vote for Trump because it was a man's dying wish, this is getting eerie

I think the point of this is not to prescribe it for every complaint. There are situations where it is needed but not at the level it is being prescribed now. It's being abused.
