60 Arrested In 'Largest Opioid Prescriber Takedown Ever'

Federal officials are charging 60 defendants across five states in what they're calling the largest opioid prescriber takedown ever. These are the first arrests announced since an opioid strike force began late last year.

Listen Listening...0:58
The defendants include 31 doctors, seven pharmacists, eight nurse practitioners and seven other licensed medical professionals. They're charged with participating in illegally prescribing and distributing opioids and other drugs, and other health care fraud schemes.

"Cases like one involving a doctor in Dayton, Ohio, who at one time was among the highest prescribers of opioids in the entire state," says U.S. Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski of the Criminal Division, speaking in Cincinnati. "That doctor allegedly operated a 'pill mill' and funneled prescriptions to the pharmacy housed in his own waiting room which dispensed over 1.75 million pills in a two-year period."

Wednesday's arrests span 11 federal districts in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama.

"As charged, these cases involve approximately 350,000 opioid prescriptions and more than 32 million pills," Benczkowski says. "[That's] the equivalent of a dose of opioids for every man, woman and child across the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and Alabama combined."

More arrests are expected and investigations are continuing. The strike force is expanding to include the Western District of West Virginia. Benczkowski says the indictments are indicative of the Trump administration and Justice Department's tough stance on the opioid epidemic.

Very true. This will end up with many lawsuits and unfortunately many suicides from people actually in pain that can’t get their meds anymore.

Just had surgery today. 2nd in 5 weeks. Some idiot doctor only gave me enough for 4 days, when I still have the pain from the last surgery.

I have direct experience with this. DEA frightened my doctor by threatening her license if her staff missed literally dotting an i or crossing a t even on the urine tests she used for those she had questions about. They came to get all the records while doctor was at the nursing home where she is medical director and there was one medical assistant and the secretary in the clinic. At that point she determined she could lose her livelihood via her medical license if they are going to be that bold.

There are NO pain clinics in rural areas, so I must travel almost two hours one way - for something I require and have complete medical evidence for.

So many people in hard-working areas like this - logging, fishing, really demanding and injury-producing jobs, develop long-term pain, but must travel so far for help - and some are older now, making travel more difficult.

Opioid deaths are counted with all the street people deaths, the poisoned street drugs deaths, all of it- then accounted to those of us who genuinely need pain care.

You are so right, Trinity. It's a travesty for many people.

I suspect that the real motivation behind this crack down on prescription pain medications is to try and force as many our brothers as possible to the black market in order satisfy their addictions that were encouraged by the corrupt medical system and the government in the first place.

Then, once they're all using black market opiates, they can keep raising the fentanyl levels to kill off as many as possible.

Genocide by stealth.

Yes, this is terrible. There is a portion of the population that are resistant to the therapeutic effects of opioids. There are a subgroup of Scandinavians that require high amounts of opioids for moderate pain control.

Are you a Scandinavian disendent and normal pain control medications don't work for you?

Jake, that's easy if the patient lives in a city. Many live in rural areas where there are NO PAIN CLINICS. From my area people must travel almost two hours to the closest - much longer to others if this one is too busy.

Re: Trumps DEA and FBI swoops in and arrests over 60 doctors and pharmacist abusing pain prescriptions
Opioids do not provide that much relief, plus they come with major baggage, namely destroying your liver, stomach, and immune system, and thus, your life. And good luck getting off them. Clearly, big pharma is full of sh!t, their pills' many lethal side effects are their ONLY effects. Notice how big pharma NEVER, EVER makes any attempt to mitigate all these side effects, they are purposely engineered into the pills so you go back for more pills for those side effects, and so on for THOSE new side effects. This gives them the most profit off the public's misery. My pain management doctor is onto this and showed me how cannabis, heat, ice, and even acupuncture, etc, are other options that ALWAYS outperform opioids without the baggage and liver destruction.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77561180

These methods may "always" beat opioids for you - you are only one person with one set of circumstances. For many, the ONLY hope is opioids. Please be aware that your experience is one, and mileage may vary for others.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77452289

Pain clinics are the current big money makers. They charge exhorbitant sums for five minutes with a doctor or PA, greater sums for drug testing urine, even of those patients who obviously would not even consider using any street drug or overdosing. It's THE way to make money in medicine today.

Many pain clinics are opening their own pharmacies now, to double dip the poor patients.

Yup, the Feds should have been concentrating on these pill mills instead of going after regular doctors and their patients with chronic pain. I suspect more people have died from fentenyl laced street drugs since the damned law was enacted than in the same time period before the law from normal prescriptions.

Some times they are just out to make regular folks as miserable as possible.

No question about the fentanyl deaths, yet those are accounted to the same group as those desperately needing their prescriptions. That weights the argument toward clamping down on pain prescriptions, with no bearing whatever on the true subject. Makes me furious.

Yes, seems like those who worked hard all their lives and suffer damage as a result should now be slapped in the face and told to go suffer quietly.

Hey, once I had a dentist tell me that I didn't need that prescription stuff for pain, that the great medical "secret" was that a Tylenol and an Advil taken together will knock out most pain .

Know what, he was right, that combo has proved perfectly effective in my pain management and those I have let in on the "secret"!

Pass it on!
