Why would we waste so many resources sending rovers to other planets when we can identify the molecules in the atmosphere and dirt of any planet using a laser?

What are we doing on those planets when our rovers land?

it's okay it makes perfect sense.

Why shine a light at a planet to read the atoms on/in it

when we can waste years developing robots and jet/rocket technology to send one there to figure out what atoms are there?
