It seems all to depend a bit on *how* you care for the poor. Societies that do care for their poor tend to be more vibrant and healthy.
But charity is complicated, indeed... ideally, it should go hand in hand with empowerment. This, to me, is something that seems to fit with both Christian and liberal ideals. :)
