They aren't being provided with FREE Housing?
They aren't being provided with FREE Medical Care?
They aren't being provided with FREE Transportation to wherever they want to go in Thailand?
Their kids (if they have any) aren't being provided with FREE education?

Obviously Thailand is not nearly as "advanced" a culture as the US is, as Western Europe is, as New Zealand is, as Canada is!!

FREE STUFF for non-citizens who didn't immigrate Legally, NOT jail, is the mantra of those more "advanced" cultures!! Thailand is way behind the times.

Not like we are going to extradite anyone to them.

The threat of death sentences against a couple who set up an offshore home near a Thai island, has sparked a debate on the growing "seasteading" movement and the right to create floating settlements to cope with the effects of climate change.

Thailand's navy on Monday towed to shore a floating cabin which had been set on top of a spar 14 nautical miles off Phuket.

Authorities said the structure was within the country's 200-mile exclusive economic zone, and charged U.S. citizen Chad Elwartowski and his Thai girlfriend with violating Thai sovereignty, punishable by death penalty or life in prison.

The whereabouts of the couple are unknown.

Ocean Builders, which funded and built the cabin, said on its website the structure was in international waters.

Seasted is that like a sheshed? Economic zones are the new international a borders and allow jurisdiction on the high seas of everyone. You want sovereignty. Get to Mars first and claim it for your self. Then have the firepower to keep it.

I sure hope he and his wife were able to make it here. This is the kind of case a government uses to make an example and send a message.

They'd probably leave you alone if you built a seasted in the middle of the Great Pacific Garbage patch, but other than that, yeah, get to Mars. Earth is claimed.
