Philippines plastic pollution: why so much waste ends up in oceans

The Philippines is the world’s third-largest ocean polluter despite a waste management act coming into effect 18 years ago. The culprits? Corruption, lack of political will – and an addiction to single-use plastic sachets.

Masses of plastic trash swirling in waterways, garbage clogging drainage canals and huge stinking dump sites are among the most visible manifestations of the waste crisis in the Philippines.

---

While they want to declare war on Canada over a violated Garbage treaty, they themselves are in violation of environmental treaties to not use the Ocean and a dumping ground.

The ecological crisis the Ocean faces is thanks to shit holes like the Philippines who are using the Ocean as their land-fill. If garbage is a reason for someone to declare war, then surely the world can declare war on some of the largest ecological terrorists and hold them accountable for their crimes against the planet perhaps starting with the Philippines.

Hardly... all the Ocean dumping is their own garbage. Someone screwed up in Canada and sent some containers of Garbage instead of recyclable plastics. It was a mistake, not an ongoing issue of shipping Garbage and from what I understand that Garbage is still in containers not floating in the Ocean or on the Philippine beaches so your claim it all came from Canada is false.

Actually it is the developed countries that are causing the problem and also hold the solution to the developing countries pollution problem.

People of PI are poor and do want to better their lives.

Give them a solution to both.

Set up Pyrolysis Plants in them via UN funding. That gives all those plastics value and a recycling industry is promoted. Fuel is created also lessening the countries dependency upon foreign oil imports.

I helped with the future Pyrolysis plant in Am. Samoa. and it can be done with very little pollution emitted.

They are starting here in the USA. EPA permitting takes time as the whole system must be tested and approved. We started working on one for American Samoa in 2016 and still waiting on EPA.

There are plans being drawn up to collect the Ocean plastic but so much of it has been rendered by the elements into microplastics it will still take decades if not centuries to lower the amounts going into the food chain. Those microplastics are in all the flesh of the seafood you eat. Yupp that was a Plastic infused Tuna fish Sandwich that you had for lunch.....

Shareholders demand a return on their investment otherwise, the costs for cleanup and disposal would cost them.

If these slave labor nations had to be responsible for the workers and garbage, it would increase the costs and bring business back here instead.

For too long Big Business have been running to slave labor nations with 0 responsibility to what happens in this or that country.

They need to be punished.

and they’re calling out the businesses most responsible for the pollution. Nestlé topped the list, followed by Unilever and Indonesian company PT Torabika Mayora.

In order, these are the companies most responsible for plastic pollution at Freedom Island according to Greenpeace: Nestlé, Unilever, PT Torabika Mayora, Universal Robina Corporation, Procter & Gamble, Nutri-Asia, Monde Nissin, Zesto, Colgate Palmolive, and Liwayway.

All irresponsible filthy corporations.
