Worth a re-read of Pournelle/Niven's "Lucifer's Hammer"... Lg asteroid calves upon entry and big huge global wipeout ensues...

One of the minor characters bivouacs overnite atop the LA basin to watch the show and have access to the Sierras. Other characters are "on an extended camping trip". Pretty much THE BEST survivalist/prepper fiction for eotwawki scenario, especially if you live in LA.

Thank you , I will give what I have been given. I do not have the contacts I use to and its frustrating at times. I will never give speculation only the exact information I was given.
Additionally I will say that this or these possible impacts are NOT the serious issue. What is potentially very serious is on the way however. As things get closer I will give more of what I have been given . I will post a thread title simply R . It will have clearer information. If you live on the west coast of the US you need to pay particular attention.

I'm sure there are frustrated, would-be science fiction writers out there, some possibly employed by legitimate high-tech firms, who like trolling the public with an end-of-the-world synopsis for a book or movie they're interested in.

They like setting up people to see how they'll react when they're conned into falling for a rumor or warning. Then laughing when people take a rumor seriously.

Maybe they have known it's gonna hit Venezuela or somewhere near there so they hurried to get all the petrol out and migrate the people on foot over the course of months as it's cheaper and didn't cause panic except those few militants from Louisiana that went in acting like the army.

Pure, good old, unadulterated, asteroid impact weekend GLP doom!

Stormy, I don't know if this is the real thing,but someday there WILL be a major asteroid strike.

For what it is worth, I was assigned a short project in the Advanced Engineering Dept. at my aerospace company to study what we could do about asteroid impacts.

Very little.

Those rocks are big and that much mass is hard to move off course. We CANNOT rendezvous with them because they are coming towards us at high velocity.

BTW, the major danger is NOT near Earth asteroids whose orbits are well defined. The danger is from deep space objects coming in from the Oort Cloud. They would be cold (hard to see in IR), low albedo (like dark as coal), and moving very fast (like 60-100 km/second.

Our only hope to knock one off course would be a nearby nuke blast. But are there nukes with upper stages ready for such a mission? Nope.

You would have to hit the asteroid/comet with a nuke while it was still far out to change it's course enough. Actual effects of a nuke on asteroid surface are unknown, so even if you could do it, you don't know how much you will change the course.

If an asteroid, e.g., a mile in diameter or more, actually does hit Earth, here are some expected results:

1. If it hits the ocean which is a 70% probability, it will cause a mega tsunami.

2. If it hits land or shallow water, it will cause earthquakes off the scale. One geology paper I read said earthquakes up to magnitude 30 in the local area. Even if you were in an underground shelter, shaking like that might beat you to death even if it did not collapse your shelter.

3. The ejecta (hot rocks) thrown out will land over an area hundreds or thousands of miles away setting anything that is flammable on fire. There was a layer of soot at the KT Impact strata that showed that most of the world burned.

4. The high heating of the atmosphere can create nitrogen compounds, e.g., nitric acid. Smog on steroids that will remain until it is removed by rain. If the asteroid hits sulfur deposits, it can create sulfuric acid in the atmosphere as well.

You may need a filter system with a scrubber for your underground lair.

5. High atmospheric heating may drive the temp to over 1000F. There is evidence that the KT Impact resulted in average temps of 450F worldwide. Add a cooling loop to that air system for the lair.

6. The dust and smoke will block the sun for years. You will need food to make it at least 5 years underground for a large impact.

After the high heating, the Earth will cool down to Ice Age conditions for years. The air may not be breathable without a respirator.

7. Expect few survivors. Expect to have to farm. Try to save basic livestock and seeds to plant.

It has happened before; it will happen again.

My conclusion: take a library of tech books into my shelter. Make a printing press to create pages out of clay tablets. Fire the clay to make ceramic plates that can last for millions of years. We will need the data, science, and engineering that we worked so hard for to rebuild civilization.

BTW, best way to avoid species extinction is to have colonies in space.
