The US-China trade talks are at risk of breakdown

JUST AS it looked like America and China were close to a deal, President Donald Trump has brought the two countries back to the brink of a full-fledged trade war. In a pair of tweets late on May 5th he threatened to slap 25% tariffs on all Chinese imports, a rate that applies to only a much smaller portion of imports now. “The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!” he said. Only a month ago he had trumpeted that an “epic deal” was in the works.

Intensified meetings in recent weeks had fuelled the impression that an agreement was in the offing. American negotiators, led by Robert Lighthizer, the United States Trade Representative, were in Beijing last week. This week Liu He, a Chinese vice-premier, was due to lead a delegation of dozens of high-level Chinese officials on a trip to Washington for the next round of discussions. Observers had started to scrutinise Mr Trump’s public schedule to find gaps when Xi Jinping, China’s president, might meet with him to sign their pact. June looked like a good option. Few would bet on that today.

China was considering delaying a U.S. trip this week by a trade delegation led by Vice Premier Liu He after Trump’s tariff threat, according people familiar with the matter. Liu and about 100 other officials had been scheduled to arrive Wednesday for what was shaping up to be the final round of negotiations.

“Risks of a full blown trade war are escalating,” Chua Hak Bin, a senior economist at Maybank Kim Eng Research Pte. in Singapore, said before the ministry’s announcement. “Trump’s threat may backfire as China will not want to negotiate with a gun pointing at their heads.”

So here's what happens. Many strong bankers see potential in a country like China and they invest and build up the country. The idea isn't to keep that investment money there forever, it's to take the profit from the investment and move to another opportunity in another region of the world.

Fatcats stayed in China and continued to rake the 1990's train at the expense of the United States. There are more than a couple players here. 25 years returns a good profit and money is pulled to go elsewhere. This is perfectly normal and healthy.

This move isn't a football game, like many of you are reacting to. It's trade and economic growth. China is ok now, they are wealthy and participating in the world economy. It's the Middle East which is not healthy. And there is where our problem is.

Could be Trump wants to invest in rebuilding the Middle East and that would be a disaster.

East Africa is the new emerging market. They out produce China x10.

This is blatantly false. China does not pay those tariffs as an exporter. American importers pay those tariffs and that cost is passed on to consumers.

How is that "partially responsible for our great economic results."

Well yeah, China is smart and mobilizing. And they have the experience. You don't see Americans jumping on that investment because most American's don't have the money or ambition. Americans are too busy being consumers.

All this is fairly basic. Doesn't make someone a "bad guy" because they are developing and investing.

Trump is saying that now that China is on it's feet and powerful they need to pay us more in tarrif, that's all. And now China can afford it, obviously.

Yes, so the result is that products cost more at the end point. And US consumers will stop buying, thus China loses the sales. Inflation to the consumers. Tighten our belts.

A family member works in manufacturing. Their employer buys steel coil from China because.. well...it's cheap. They stocked up big time before the tariffs. Engineers at the firm know the quality is not as high but it meets minimum spec. And did I mention, it's cheap?

Given a tariff that makes the cost the same for higher quality US made steel or Chinese junk, which will they go with? I do agree that the consumer will be the one to pay for this. But the ripple effect is complex.

More US steel needs more workers. Higher demand for workers means higher wages. The product needs to be transported, meaning more trucking fees and more jobs for truckers. More sales of diesel, more truckers eating at truck stops, etc. With more money in their pockets, people won't worry as much about the higher prices and if the quality is better, there is a bonus. More money also means more going out to eat, vacations, etc.

I like the idea of ending globalization and making things locally, bringing back industry to america and so on, but in the short term, a trade war is going to cause a lot of economic ain, since the current system is entirely based on on global trade.

Great sentiment, but the Chinese manufacturing industry has improved in leaps and bounds over the last 15 odd years, mainly due to the hiring of European and American machinery experts rejigging their formerly inferior factories. Their QC and their product quality is at least on par with "western nations", and very quickly surpassing. Harley? Fender? Gibson?
