It's not illegal to go "off-grid" as long as you pay the power company a minimal fee. When people speak of "off grid" in Florida, it means you live on the property and you don't pay the power company any money at all. You can live off-grid, but you must pay the minimal fee that everyone has to pay for the privilege of possibly having electric power.
