There was a helium shortage about 10 years ago I remember we couldn't use balloons to decorate with where I work for a year. I thought that's strange a helium shortage?

I went to Party City last week, not for balloons but catering supplies for a party I am helping with. I noticed the stock is dwindling and not like it used to be.

Helium was a very important strategic material for military purposes, and nuclear research. The Federal government subsidized the expensive separation and storage of it from natural gas. Once it was removed as a strategic material, the subsidies were not there. Good news is there is still plenty of hydrogen. That will make birthday parties interesting in the future.
