i´ve spent a few thanksgivings alone before...

it´s nice. i enjoyed it quite a bit.

rent some movies. get a couple bottles of red wine, take some mushrooms, and there you have it.

a perfect feast.

and in my case, so much better than seeing the family i don´t like or don´t even know at this point.

have a good one OP.

Get used to it OP. As the die-off begins in earnest, and social distancing is taken to the nth degree, those congregating for holidays will be few and far between. In fact, it will become a felony to do so. So right now, you're ahead of the curve.

Re: Who else will sit alone in an empty house this Thanksgiving?
Well, I am alone this year because it is alright to treat me like shit according to other family members including my mother.

They all get together at my stepsisters on holidays and family birthdays. I am not invited, and I am a kind, smart, giving person. No person deserves to be treated like this any day of the year. Yes, it hurts, this is Hurt A Daughter Season as I have coined it.

I will not interact to that behavior and give it my energy.

Now, on the good side, I have plans to go out and have breakfast at a restaurant, and have a spending spree at "The Dollar Tree." I also am covered up with work at my business and have a gazillion things I am behind on, so when I get my mind set on those, bad behaviors from family will melt away.

I'm just an old man who's given up on humanity so yes, tho there will be people here, I'll sit alone.....

Well not quite. My dogs will keep me company.

The more I know about people the more I like my dogs......

Smart man once stated that and never truer then today.

I have spent the last 3 years alone on all holidays. I like the idea of volunteering. It will give us human interaction and remind us to be thankful. I don’t have family where I live. I won’t for a very long time, traveling is hard, so I work or stay home and try to make it good for myself. So holidays I use to my advantage. Catch up on sleep. Do stuff for myself. Watch a movie.

I wont be alone, i will be with my kids, but the rest of the family i prolly wont see. I somehow thru the years didn't keep up with them. half of them moved across the country.

Basically, i have a family but i do not feel close to them, nor have anything to say. i hate getting together for christmas because thats when everyone gets together and i see how they aged and its scary.

I don't ever assume that I am "alone" or that my house is empty ... whether you are willing to admit that you created that "reality" by not appreciating what you HAVE

I give thanks for my circumstance EVERY DAY - I love my INDEPENDENCE - not a day goes by that I don't express my gratitude for LIFE to my creator ... I cherish every moment of it and love the challenges that it offers to enhance my Consciousness of WHAT IS

you should try doing that ... and see how rewarding being Independent is ...

My family all moved away, over 20 years ago, they each started new lives around their families.

Probably wouldn't hardly recognize anyone, anyway.

Last I heard, they each got the vaccination for covid.

Now, I couldn't sit down for dinner or visit any one of them, even if I wanted to.

I have a new protocol, not to be in a room where someone who was vaccinated has been, for four days.
Guess I could hold my breath, walk in, then walk right out.

There's probably a community meal somewhere, that serves, to-go.

Three grown kids, living 100´s of miles away, been trying to make friends and cultivate relationships for years, but I have no one to spend the holidays with. Not even going to try this year. Not celebrating anything, probably going to unplug the phone.

Here's what I do if I am alone - disclaimer: very task oriented. I make a list of unfinished hobby projects and other projects I just like doing. I set the day up so I do only what I want to do. I play a movie while building my new gadgets. Drink a little Bacardi spiced rum with Trader Joes Country Peach juice and I feel great.

The problem comes in when you compare yourself to what you imagine others are doing or enjoying. The grass is always greener elsewhere. Don't do that. This is your life. What do YOU want to be doing? What would you want to do even if no one else would do that with you?

Other families are living with this tinge of tension due to family splits over money, or vaccination status, or personality conflicts, or needing to "impress" another member of the family. There are worse times to be had with others around. Yes, it can also be great, but not, by any means, always.

Re: Who else will sit alone in an empty house this Thanksgiving?
Nothing wrong with being alone.

Learn to love yourself and enjoy your own company.

If you REALLY need a friend, adopt a shelter animal. They are the only ones that will be loyal for life.

I live with 3 other family members; we are complete opposites politically, morally, etc. I love them and they love me, but sometimes it's worse than living alone.

For example- I have been stuck in the kitchen cooking dinner for 2 days- one of them chooses to watch 4 shitty Netflix series and some stupid Beatles documentary ALL DAY, every day.

I've literally been forced to listen to crap ass 'music' by 4 untalented C I A spooks and see/hear lgbtq satanic Christmas commercials non-stop.

Blech.

Be grateful for the silence and freedom to do what YOU want.

My house is not empty. I have between 25 and 30 relatives coming over and most are here already. Lots of great grandkids running amuck.

Many of them are going to see Ginger Congo for the first time, yep we got married recently, she isn't Ginger Granny anymore.

Got two big turkeys cooking and lots of side dishes getting ready. 3 extra tables set up in the great room. People everywhere. I'm not used to that many people anymore, but that is why God made Cognac.

DEAR LONELIEST,

IF YOU ARE FEMALE, SINGLE AND FINANCIALLY SECURE... THEN YOU MAYBE MY TYPE OF LADY! WANTED, A NICE COUCH TO SLEEP ON AND A PLACE TO HANG THE COWBOY HAT, A STALL FOR THE PONY AND A SHOP FOR THE HARLEYS...

WE CAN SLEEP WITH EACH OTHER, AFTER WE FALL IN LOVE... THEN I MOVE INTO "OUR" ROOM AND LET THE SEXUAL GAMES BEGIN, I WAS A GOOD LOVER ONCE, NOW A WIDOWER AND BASICALLY A VIRGIN ALL OVER AGAIN!

AGE 40 SOMETHING NEAR 50 BUT AGE IS MEANINGLESS, IF YOU ARE RICH, CAN SUPPORT YOURSELF AND ABSOLUTELY SAY, "NO" YOU WILL NOT SUPPORT ME FINANCIALLY BUT RATHER KICK MY ASS OUT OF BED EVERY MORNING AND SAY, "GET TO WORK BOY" AND I SAY YES MA'AM AFTER MORNING SEX!

NOT SLEEPLESS, BUT NEAR SEATTLE, HI BABE!

No family left, so no Thanksgiving. I don't do holidays anymore.

Just finished doing a ton of yardwork and I am thankful that I still have the health to do it.

Went to a sit-down community meal last Friday. By Tuesday, I had a cough, sore throat, fever with chills. Took some IVM and 25,000 IU of vitamin D3, and was well again the next morning upon waking.
It doesn't take much to get me wary of what's going on.

Re: Who else will sit alone in an empty house this Thanksgiving?
I´m sorry to hear that, loneliest. My Mom & Dad don´t "do" the holidays anymore. Too stressful for them. None of my siblings live in my town. My hubbys family lives in this town, but they´re all assholes, lol!

So this will be our third annual Thanksgiving camping trip. We take a ham, the weather is always cool. It´s wonderful. We appreciate what we´re really thankful for. Wish you could come with us.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 0

I think that's FANTASTIC! Who says you have to follow some social norm for Thanksgiving. Being thankful is just that. It can be celebrated anywhere, with others or alone. Having a special food is great. But camping. Roughing it is a great way to realize how nice it is to have a roof overhead and central heat and all the comforts that your home provides.

I really like this idea. Next year I'm going camping.

Re: Who else will sit alone in an empty house this Thanksgiving?
I prefer it. For years I had tons of people over. I cleaned and cooked and baked - wore myself out every single year - both Thanksgiving and Christmas! Then, we had a fancy New Year's party for a couple dozen friends. Meanwhile, with a few exceptions, everybody else just sat around and talked and drank and had a great time while I worked my butt off. I love talking to and spending time with family and friends, but I don't like the stress and I don't want to put my kids through that, either. I would rather meet up with them between Thanksgiving and Christmas or at another time of year, go out and eat and let somebody else do the work! And screw the New Year's party - people just want to get drunk, anyway, and that's not safe here in the mountains.

Don't feel sorry for yourselves - you have a roof over your head and money to make a meal. Enjoy your time. Take the dog for a walk. Do some chores that are piling up. Write Christmas cards. Watch Christmas Vacation for the 200th time. Enjoy the little things.

My kids (and some of my friends) think I'm nuts for turning down their offers. But for my kids, I would have to fly in huge crowds in the middle of a pandemic, to NY or CA, and the one I didn't visit would be hurt. It's not worth that just to eat some turkey! LOL! Actually, some of us are getting together next week, anyway, so I will be gone for a few days for that. That's plenty of togetherness for this Holiday Season. When I first divorced, I was a little lonely during holidays because I was so used to the crowds, but now it's my preference to be a stick in the mud. Relish your time alone!!!

Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Send them a text message that you are setting up a Zoom meeting for everyone at 6:00 p.m. and send them a meeting link. You can all have a nice little chat for 1/2 hour or so, see everybody's faces, and you DON'T HAVE TO COOK AND CLEAN FOR COMPANY! There's always a bright side.
