Quoting: BOOM! State Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand has confirmed several cases of "canine Brucellosis" coming from a commercial small-dog breeding facility in Marion County. The sickness is known to only affect dogs and humans, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. And WTF? "The zoonotic bacterial disease is spread through reproductive fluids, the release states." Who was the sicko that figured that one out. More at link. They function as facultative intracellular parasites, causing chronic disease, which usually persists for life. Four species infect humans: B. abortus, B. canis, B. melitensis, and B. suis. B. abortus is less virulent than B. melitensis and is primarily a disease of cattle. B. canis affects dogs. B. melitensis is the most virulent and invasive species; it usually infects goats and occasionally sheep. B. suis is of intermediate virulence and chiefly infects pigs. Symptoms include profuse sweating and joint and muscle pain. Brucellosis has been recognized in animals and humans since the 20th century. darth User ID: 28178764 United States 05/12/2019 01:57 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I became very aware of brucellosis when I was hunting wild hogs. I wore long gloves, a plastic apron, rubber boots, and a face shield until the meat was cooked. That seems like a lot of work, but I got over 1000 lbs. of lean pork in one year, so I did not mind. |

Only thing I've ever worried about is the lyme disease from ticks...we have about 30 acres and walk the property often and always end up with those little bastards crawling on our clothes.
