Anonymous Coward User ID: 76019336 United States 05/13/2019 05:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Live in Louisville. It blew everyone here away. I heard one horse owner on local radio afterwards. He said the problem is that they only have ten horse gates, and they have to push them together, leaving a big gap in the middle. When the horses take off, they are all basically headed towards each other and with a 20 horse field, that initial collision can cause chaos and the horses can never settle into a tight lane. He suggested a 20 hourse gate, where they all take off in a lane from the get go and don't veer, would solve the issue. But Churchill DOwns is too cheap to make it. Interesting perspective at least. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 71388910 United States 05/13/2019 05:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The racing stewards and commissioners have completely screwed this issue. Quoting: MarPep [link to www.usatoday.com (secure)] "The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has suspended Maximum Security jockey Luis Saez for 15 racing days after determining he interfered with other riders in the controversial 2019 Kentucky Derby. Days after race stewards met with the jockeys involved in the inquiry that led to Maximum Security’s disqualification, the commission announced Monday that Saez is suspended for 15 racing days. The KHRC cited "failure to controI his mount and make the proper effort to maintain a straight course thereby causing interference with several rivals that resuIted in the disqualification of his mount," in its ruling against Saez." Listen, if they got the original ruling wrong, this is their way of backing up their ruling right or wrong. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76879092 United States 05/13/2019 06:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Quoting: WhatsItAllAbout Alfie I was saying this ever since the day of the race. It's hard NOT to notice Tyler Gaffalione's bizarre ride on War of Will. Watching the race in real time I was wonder WTF is he doing? He was all up on Maximum Security's ass at least twice. He bulled his way into a hole that didn't exist and basically took over Long Range Toddy's running path by force. When you sit behind the leader on the rail most of the race like Gaffalione did with War of Will you wait for the rail to open at the top of the stretch or swing wide and go around the leader. Often time the rail doesn't open up and there is no room to swing wide because other horses have taken that path. That's just racing luck. Gaffalione made his move early and when there was no room. He knew he screwed up. That is why he did not lodge a claim of foul. He SHOULD have been the one to lodge a claim of foul if he felt he was interfered with. He didn't, because he knew hefucked up. The stewards could not have looked at this for 20 minutes and not seen how bizarre War of Will's ride was. I am starting to believe that the stewards used this incident as an opportunity to penalize a trainer they are suspicious of (Jason Servis - many accuse him of being a 'juicer') and to reward a trainer that is very well respected in racing (Bill Mott - the guy who trained Cigar). I was 50/50 on the DQ. I didn't like the decision because it is the Derby and there has never been a DQ for what happens in the race in 145 years. Some replays look bad for Maximum Security and there was some danger involved so I justified the DQ on that reasoning even though I didn't agree with it. This video just pisses me off. Maximum Security got screwed. Country House was declared the winner but may have been the 4th best horse that day. Country House then got a lung infection and is out of the Preakness and Belmont races, so no shot for a Triple Crown winner this year. Nobody is excited for the Preakness. People are still pissed about the DQ. If you go by the letter of the rule you would have to DQ War of Will and Country House for their bumping and I bet you could find another 3 or 4 to DQ as well. Would anybody want to bet on a race where the official order of finish after DQs doesn't even resemble the actual order of finish? It would be like playing the lottery. Random numbers. No skill or analysis required. This DQ was awful for the sport and I am sick of hearing the paid talking heads all nodding in agreement about the 'right decision' being made when it is highly questionable whether the right decision was made or not. |

I would cross so that I wouldn't get a speck of mud on me and if that meant riding four abreast, so be it. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76879092 United States 05/13/2019 06:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Such bullshit. This happens all the time and never gets enforced. Just like high sticking in hockey. Only called when a ref wants to bust balls or it is too egregious i.e. hockey stick cuts someone. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74775434 Not really. Horses DO get DQd all the time. The problem as I see it is that in the NFL if they review a call the public usually watches reviews with commentary by the broadcasters and 95% of the time you know what decision is coming. There is nothing close to that in racing. Everybody just sort of holds their breath until the stewards make a decision and even though I've been a fan since I was 8 and now work in the industry I don't have a clue what decision is coming. It's a coin flip. There is no consistency and states have different rules. Those rules are interpreted differently by different stewards. We tend to just accept that fact in racing. When a horse is DQd in a big race like this it just leaves a bad taste in everybody's mouth - especially those who aren't paying attention to racing very often. |
