Sounds like we've both seen the differences from around the world. I'm early 50's. When I tell my friends in my new country how many hours most professional people work on average (40+ per week) and that mortgages are typically 30 years with high property taxes, they are shocked. They never knew how hard US citizens have to work for their lifestyle. All they see is the fruit of our labors and they think everything was handed to us.

I grew up with a single mom and little money. I had to pay my way through college and work for more than 15 years to build a great career. My life didn't start to show real benefits of all my hard work until my late 30's. Not once did I think someone owed me something other than the opportunity to try my best. Everything I have I earned with hard work, no handouts.

Legal immigrants tend to be more thoughtful and resourceful. They come to the US with a skill or a burning desire to BUILD their own American dream. They don't come breaking the law and complaining that they are starving and should be helped without question. She earned her citizenship by doing exactly what this country required her to do. During the process, from every individual, working every level of this governmental process, we were encouraged and instructed on what we needed to do and how best to do it. They wanted her in this country. The true American spirit came alive and was witnessed in everyone involved in her naturalization process.

She, as well as her countless other family members back in Peru, fully support our President. She sees his policies as common sense and fair. She laughs when the word "racist" is used against him. Because she did the work in which she was required to do, she has absolutely zero sympathy for those who break the law and claim they had to, all to be given the same privileges and rights she has earned, the legal, right way.
