Depressing Video Game Music
The saddest video game music I've ever heard was during the water stages of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. Every time I hear that music it reminds me of a friend of mine leaving and me never seeing that friend again. One friend in particular was an intern teacher I met from another class when I went to middle school during the 1986/'87 semester. Early the next year she left and I never saw her again. When I hear that particular music it makes me miss her.

If you think the music in the water stages of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is depressing, the music in the Pokémon Tower in Pokémon R/B/Y is tear-inducing.

That reminds me of how pro boxer Mr. Hollywood Rubin Williams only had losses between 2008-2018, yet he keeps on coming back, wow!!!
10 years, 31 losses, it certainly makes me glad that only elections are rigged...

If you're looking for the depressing music I'm talking about in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, go to YouTube and enter "wario land super mario land 3 music water stage" as your search term (no quotation marks) and listen to the music. I think you'll agree that the music is depressing.

Re: Depressing Video Game Music
The ending music in Revenge of the King, a sub game in Kirby Super Star Ultra is pretty depressing. You see King DeDeDe walking home with a sad kind of look. It's sadder than the ending music in Revenge of Meta Knight in which the damaged ship descends, after which they show the abilities and the enemies that use them.

Ok I did it. I think it isn't depressing, it's just a really good score using harmonic minor and major scale, which really can give an emotional response especially if there is a girl involved. Pulls on the heart strings. Those Nintendo creators really new how to mess with kids with music.. it is impressive because I don't think the Japanese were known for their music other than Taiko drumming which is pretty much unharmonic.

My question though is why did you say 1987 you heard it when the game clearly did not come out until 1993. Were you abducted!?

Re: Depressing Video Game Music
I wasn't abducted. I bought the game on my birthday in 1994 and the first time I heard the water stage music it made me miss my friend who left seven years ago. To this day, when I hear that music, I still miss my friend and I still find the music depressing.

It's the part where they switch back and forth between the C and C#maj7 chords and the melody that depresses me.

Re: Depressing Video Game Music
And? What are you getting at? Whats your point? Find something nostalgic that depresses you? Welcome to the club. Now imagine the worst outcome possible that you're friend ended up going to do with their life. That's right, you thought you were depressed before? Reality is so much worse. Shall I make some suggestions to the result of your friends fate? Or do you want to hear some even more depressing video game music? Its hard to judge just what it is you're looking for with this thread. No where do I surmise what it is you're seeking with the creation of this thread. So, do tell. What is it? What do you want to know?

I think you are getting caught up thinking it is a C#maj7 when it is really just a Cmajor chord and a Db Major chord (same as C# major chord), but it's not alternating between Cmajor adn C#maj7 but a C#maj7 does come out of it if you are counting the trasition of the melody because the C major chord and C# major chord are right next to each other so they have all the notes needed for a c#maj7. That being said though this song I would say is in the key of F harmonic minor because the next chords it goes to are 7th chords after the initial chords, it then moves to C7 (dominant 7) then to Bbmin7 and then to a walk down starting with abmaj7#5. That last one is where it gets real spooky. I don't have time to analyze the rest of it, but this is clearly using the harmonic minor.

I love stuff like this and that old Nintendo music has caught me missing friends and taking on special meaning too at times. I feel ya.

Man you just took me back my elementary school PE teacher when I was little kid played this for us on some rainy day. What is this the first stupid techno song in existence or something? I freaking hate this song thanks for ruining my day.

The most eerie, chilling and depressing music I know of is Richard Rodney Bennett's "Kidnapping" which starts in the below at 2.18 .....

None of the music they play in Castlevania: The Adventure sounds very uplifting, but IMO, the music you hear in Level 1 is the most depressing and the sound the Eagle makes when he appears is pretty depressing too.

Re: Depressing Video Game Music
Kirby Mass Attack has some depressing tracks. Dark Clouds is very depressing. It's not just the chords I find depressing. It's the melody too. Another depressing track is Underground which is only heard in Stage 1-4. Notebook Notes, which, by the way, plays following the closing credits when they show you how many fruits you collected and how many enemies you defeated and all that, is pretty depressing.
