Humans have impressive manifesting powers,
if you keep peoples mind on a loop of deevolution they eventualy bring it upon themselves. If you add to the mix some deep complexes about looking for solutions outside, the tend to believe there is nothing they can do and the way things are are, well, inevitable.

It is a misconception and more telling of the surroundings and mental field of the person.
