It was. He tore through the locked door.
Another one in this area tore a closed and locked car door off recently. If they want to get in to something, chances are good they'll get in.

Sorry Op that’s horrible.
A raccoon once broke into my mother in laws chicken coop and killed all of her sixteen silky chicken just for sport. She was devastated.

Hawks have discovered where my chicken run is. I'm glad now that we decided to cover the run. Idk how determined hawks are though...

Shithead tore through my coop and now I only have 2 live chickens left. I hope some of them got away. They were young. Like 3 months old.

If I see that f-er again, I'll respect that he's a bear and that he just does what he does. And he'll come to respect that I'm a human, who just does what he does.

My floor could use a bearskin rug.
As a human who acts naturally, I'm going to make one.

Nature.

Oh that's horrible. Silkies are really nice and unique little birds. Expensive too.

Yeah, I'm going to reinforce the coop. Maybe try a little psychological warfare on the bear too. Or shoot it (but probably not). Won't really help too much though, given there are a ton of other bears out here. And I also have to contend with the foxes, coyotes, raccoons, bobcats and mountain lions.

My chicken fence is six foot high (2" by 4" wire on T posts) with electric fence on the outside. Two strands - one down low for skunks and foxes and a second strand at 30 to 36 inches. Get the heaviest shocker (weed choppers) you can buy.

My legged predator problems ended and now my largest problem are the winged varieties. Owls at night and various hawks and eagles by daylight.

Bee keepers use electric fences to keep the bears out of their hives. Might that be an option? I wouldn't think it would do any damage to the hide should you opt for the new rug.

Re: A bear just killed 8 of my 10 chickens. AMA
The flying predator problem dropped after placing a goose decoy within the chicken fence area. Also, the chicken fence area contains a sizable raspberry patch. The chickens scrounge around in the raspberries and eat the emerging weeds. They don't eat very many berries which I thought would be a problem.

A leg hold trap for foxes placed on top of a high post with some feathers covering (use a bit of glue for wind) takes care of the most bold flying predator.

Burn the evidence and keep your mouth shut. Don't keep feathers or post stupid pictures.

Skunks are surprisingly tolerant of getting hit with that lower electric fence. I have found burned skunk hairs a number of different times. One skunk dug a tunnel under the electric fence and under the chicken wire.

Took some effort to stop that one.

Dug my own trench inside from the skunks trench. Wide enough for a conibear beaver trap. Then put a couple of dog kennel fence panels inside to keep the chickens safe. Couple of days later I had the skunk.

Yeah. I hope so. I keep looking.

That bear did his damage in under 1 minute. I watched him walk up and sniff around. Yelled at it. He didn't respond at all, so I ran inside to get something to scare it off. In under a minute, I was back outside and he was headed away. I thought I may have scared him off, but when I pointed a flashlight at the coop, I saw the door had been ripped in half and there were some chicken bodies and parts in there.

Less than 1 minute isn't a ton of time to eat ~5 birds (2 bodies at least in there he didn't eat). So, I'm hoping some ran out and didn't get eaten by anything else (fox, coyote, etc). I'm pretty sure the one I found this morning wasn't in the coop last night when I assessed the damage. So she was probably out in the wild, then came back to the coop this morning to check on her friends. I'm hoping there are more like that.

Yeah, I think I will put up electric fencing. Maybe just turn it on at dusk. Don't want to scare the deer away.

The bear ate once. It will be back.

Just shoot it and keep quiet. Don't brag about or post it about it here because there are a bunch of sick animal worshipers who hate people on this site. If the fuzz shows up you can claim self defense because it was a bear.

Chickens love bear meat, so do fruit trees. I do not, cooking it stinks up the house, takes some getting used to.

Yep.

Fruit trees love deer meat too. Pick up a road kill and bury it at the periphery of the root ball - watch that tree flourish and produce.

Spring bear tastes better than fall. Get them right after they emerge and are eating grass. Young bear is better than old.

??? first fencing I put up was to keep deer out of my garden.

Chickens came later. They don't pay in small lots other than you know they are organic and fresh. Costs more for feed and care than the eggs and meat cost at the grocery store.

Big chicken operations work on volume. They only profit a dollar per chicken per year. But they have a million chickens.

I like the deer. I'm cool with them on my property. I don't have to worry about them eating my garden plants, as I have to protect each plant with it's own wire mesh anyway, due to the chipmunks, squirrels and rabbits. Those are the biggest threat to my garden.

And yeah, I know it isn't cost-effective to raise chickens. It was more of a hobby - I like chickens - and prep for a time where we may have food shortages

That cheep deer netting works great to keep out the chickens, coons, deer, wolves, even moose but the bears just rip right through it. Elc fence is a must for bears, it saved my life a few years back, stopped a bear charging right at me.

10 years of chickens in that coop with no problem from bears. It is sturdy and reinforced. He just really wanted in last night.

Actually, no. It was likely a raccoon. Previous owner of this place had only 1 killing of his chickens over many years. Raccoons ripped off the majority of his chicken's heads, through the chicken wire. They didn't even want to eat the chickens. Just wanted to kill them.

Just cut off his right paw. That would be the muslim thing to do.

Of course, you could setup a bear-banger to explode if the bear comes near the chicken coop again but that would take some ingenuity... so just go all muslim on his ass instead.
