Texas Driver Responsibility Program is being Repealed!
The draconian surcharge program in Texas (DRP) is finally being done away with. After 16 years, this failed program has suspended over 1.4 million Texans drivers licenses, trapping low-income Texans in a ruthless cycle of debt and incarceration. Yesterday, the Texas Senate unanimously voted for HB 2048 which will do away with the program and eliminate all outstanding
surcharges.

HB still has yet to be signed by governor Greg Abbott, however even if it receives a veto from Abbott, the House and Senate can overturn the veto with another vote. If there is no veto, and the governor does not sign the bill within 10 days, the bill still becomes law & the DRP will be repealled.

[link to capitol.texas.gov (secure)]

On a related topic, Greg Abbott is personally named in a class-action lawsuit regarding the DRP. There is also a FEDERAL case ongoing in regards to the constitutionality of surcharge programs which, if successful, will require states to refund any and all surcharges ever collected.

As a Mason, my "Uncle Intel" sources have informed me that HB 2048 will WITHOUT A DOUBT become law.

My fellow Texans... The oppression is finally over!

2nd that.

Being proven as unconstitutional, not only will the states be liable for restitution... they will also be open to being sued for damages. Almost 10% of the Texan population has had their licenses suspended by the DRP, untold numbers have had their lives destroyed by the hardships imposed by this de facto double jeapordy bovine sctaology.
Lawmakers have resisted eliminating the program as it "funded trauma centers". However--- what they NEVER admit to is only HALF of the funds collected went to trauma care, the other half has gone into the State General Fund. Greedy, deceptive bass-tards.

Rick Perry should be slathered in honey, staked down on top of a fire ant bed, and left to die. THAT would be true blind justice for what he has done to to Texas with his "pet" program.

About time, very unconstitutional, mostly a revenue grab that backfired. The State made unemployable had to resort to welfare to take care of necessary needs.

Was this program responsible for the people that always drive thru parking lots here scanning people's license plates? I see that all the time here....nowhere else and I have lived in several other states.

On a side note, now if only they'd repeal the "Drive Friendly" bullshit and replace it with "For the love of god, please follow the rules of the road" slogan. I'm all for friendliness but these "friendly" drivers here put friendliness before following common sense rules of the road and I have seen it almost get people killed....one of them being me. Best example is how people here will just completely stop in the middle of a road that doesn't have to stop, simply to wave a person trying to make a left hand turn, onto the road in front of them....just to be "friendly". Meanwhile the person barrelling at them from behind has no clue why they are stopped in the middle of the road for no reason. Happens ALL the time here in my experience.

This is great! I hope it sets precedence. In canada the government and SGI are out of control with excessive fines, surcharges and siezing and impounding vehicles.

Will it now be safe to carry cash to Dallas to buy a car, without it being stolen by Texas police?

Funny how 'social security' has a shortfall...but never WELFARE!

Somehow, we can always afford ALL types of welfare (even for millions of illegal immigrants!), plus billions in foreign aid to nations that hate us...BUT...social security is a "problem".

Dallas?!?!? Probably not! Definately steer clear of Garland, Ft Worth, and Rockwall as well. Collin County as a whole is also full of corrupt, Hillary-loving cops... Best bet is to get cashier's checks. From what I've heard is there's a dealership in Brownwood that makes damn good deals for people that pay cash money.

I have 3 places I live. I'm old and that's what I worked for.
1. Sammamish Washington.
2. Maui Hawaii.
3. Dallas Texas.
Law enforcement is so different from place to place. In Washington they are helpful and tolerant. You really have to push their buttons to even get a ticket. Maui they are non existent. Dallas, oh boy, Dallas has warrant generators in their cars!!! It's a money making businesss. If choose to have some green legally in Washington and 2 weeks later I get into a wreck when an illegal alien crashes into me, if they take blood(they will if wreck is bad), I'm automatically at fault for I have THC in my system. Total whack.

Times maybe changed. Buddy was driving us back from Sno Casino around 3am. Blizzard conditions and he's got the windows down just singing his ass off. Highway patrol pulls us over and tells us never mind that they're looking drunks and druggies. Being from Oklahoma, I was stunned. We would've been booked and car towed and searched if it was the Midwest.
