I have actually made a small fortune in my career because I am one of the few people that can actually read and write. There is a market for intelligent, thoughtful, and well-spoken workers. They can serve in any number of capacities in private industry, including sales, client relations, operations, law, and more. It all depends on how you apply those skills. The other thing is that these types of graduates tend to have higher incomes long-term because they aren't capped out on salary early in their career. I'd rather hire an articulate, smart, and well-read college graduate that can read and write than a business school graduate that lacks these skills. |

Let's see, the wife graduated 5th in her high school class, qualified for an honors scholarship at a state university, took a full course load plus worked a full time campus job, in which she advanced so by the time she graduated (took five years because she doubled majored and worked)she was making 100k in an IT job for the university. She then continued to work through her masters, and then landed an even better job working for the feds. Teachers retirement plan and a federal retirement plan. No student loans. But then she didn't go to college to party, she went to get the hell out of dodge, she grew up quite poor and made the most of every opportunity she received. |

Eleven years of college keeps me entertained. I’m glad I know about the world. I’m glad I had that much college (only have a BA! ). Quaker college was the best one. State university had the most interesting students. Jesuit college taught me aBout a whole different world view than my own. I don’t mind being educated. The loans? Defaulted. As a result I can’t work. I see no point if I’m going to be working for a government that no longer works right. I’ve dropped out a long time ago. I don’t need money and if it comes down to it I don’t need food. I’ll never be a slave or a prisoner. My parents paid off Quaker college laans. The best part of the education won’t squeak when I use it. I don’t mind being poor and educated. Rich and educated isn’t the better way. I’ve met a lot of those kinds. I would never trade my education for their money. Education has saved my life a couple of different times and a couple of different ways. I mean that literally. PTSD and a sound education...also innocence and dojo training. I don’t know how I got so lucky. Physical training—the dreaded PE requirement—is as important as all the rest. To be real honest though if there were ONE thing I’d do differently—I’d pay better attention to what dad was doing when I had to hold the flashlight. We gave him about a hundred goodies neck and free standing flashlights for all holidays. It was a long time before I caught on WHY I had to hold the flashlight. |
